Emergency Medicine - Erie Shores HealthCare

Welcome to the Erie Shores HealthCare emergency medicine team! We sincerely hope you enjoy your rotation with us.

Introduction

Erie Shores HealthCare offers Emergency Medicine training for both medical students and residents. We have an experienced and diverse group of Emergency Physicians with various backgrounds and training, including CCFP, CCFP-EM and FRCPC. Generally, all training is conducted on-one-one with the staff physician preceptor. This attention allows increased educational opportunities and the chance for direct observation and feedback of resuscitation and procedural skills. Trainees can also expect daily shift evaluations, which count toward an end of rotation summative evaluation. Scheduling is very flexible. We will respect your vacation and education requests. Trainees are encouraged to think about their learning goals and objectives so we can work together to customize a rotation that meets your unique needs. As a department, we recognize that having trainees as team members is a tremendous asset and privilege – we want to do everything we can to ensure the best possible learning experience.

Scheduling

Residents undertaking a 4-week elective in Emergency Medicine can expect to work 15 to 18 shifts, varying in length from 6 to 8 hours. Medical students undertaking an elective in Emergency Medicine can expect to work 4 to 5 shifts per week, with each shift varying in length from 6 to 8 hours. You will be assigned a staff physician mentor at the beginning of your rotation. We will do our best to align your specific interests, goals and objectives with that of your mentor. You will work a minimum of 4 clinical shifts with your mentor.

Working in the Emergency Department

The emergency department can be a fast-paced and potentially intimidating working environment. We encourage you to discuss with your preceptor at the beginning of each shift what your learning objectives are. Introduce yourself to other team members in the department, including nursing, respiratory therapy and clerical staff—they are a great resource for you. Depending on your training, experience and learning objectives, your supervising physician will have variable expectations regarding reviewing cases, ordering investigations, consultation requests and discharging patients. It is important for you to clarify these expectations at the beginning of each shift.

Teaching

In advance of your rotation, we will share educational resources tailored to your interests, level of training and experience to help you get the most out of your rotation with us. We are pleased to offer both medical students and residents rotating through our department formal and informal educational opportunities, including: one-on-one teaching sessions on a topic of the trainee’s choosing; dedicated point-of-care ultrasound teaching, with the trainee being assigned a personal Butterfly IQ ultrasound device for the duration of the rotation; leading or participating in emergency department in situ simulation; and presenting at departmental educational rounds. While these educational opportunities are optional, trainees are encouraged to take advantage of them.
