Practice Profile

The training program at Critical Care at Western (CCW) is a RCPSC accredited program for training in adult critical care medicine. All acute care for training purposes is located within the general medical/surgical intensive care units of LHSC. The Critical Care Trauma Centre (CCTC) at Victoria Hospital and the Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) at University Hospital are tertiary level units and serve as regional referral centres for southwestern and northern Ontario. A highly qualified multiprofessional team cares for patients and there are no restrictions on the level of acuity, or the type of medical, surgical or trauma cases accepted.

Both the CCTC and the MSICU offer elective rotations for Family Medicine residents. There are 26 beds in the Critical Care Trauma Centre (CCTC) at Victoria Hospital and 25 beds in the general Medical Surgical ICU (MSICU) at University Hospital with a total of approximately 3,000 ICU admissions annually between the two sites.

The Critical Care program is well integrated in terms of patient care, education and research. Some of the prominent services provided include transplant, neurosciences, and cardiovascular services at University Hospital and the trauma, OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY, thoracic and oncology services at Victoria Hospital. We have a strong educational program that attracts medical house staff from around the world, and provides training to undergraduate and graduate physicians from many programs. During your rotation you are responsible for the care of an assigned number of patients on a daily basis. The types of problems you will encounter will include: patients with cardiovascular and respiratory failure; patients with sepsis, multi-system organ failure and post-operative complications; patients admitted from the emergency department, and patients from many services as listed above.  Residents have the opportunity to insert and manage central venous and arterial catheters, intubate patients and manage patients on mechanical ventilation, and manage vasoactive drugs. Symptom and pain management, antibiotic therapy, nutrition, social and rehabilitative issues are addressed daily as part of whole patient care plan. All residents participate in the daily educational rounds as well Citywide Grand Rounds, morbidity and mortality rounds, and CSTAR simulation experiences.

Call responsibility:
All trainees at the PGY2 level and above MUST do ICU call as the first call resident, regardless of the program they come from. This resident will be on-call with a Senior ICU resident and an ICU consultant. PGY1 trainees do 'buddy call'. This is on-call in combination  with a PGY2 or above level trainee.
