Practice Profile

The Emergency Department at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, located 30 minutes south of London, is a busy urban emergency department seeing approximately 54,000 visits/annum. St. Thomas is a full service hospital with most services found at larger hospitals including internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, palliative care, and a host of surgical subspecialties. We enjoy a good relationship with our community GP's.

The ER treats a wide variety of patients, similar to any larger emergency department. We insist on maintaining a one-to-one staff to resident/student ratio which provides easy access to staff and an excellent learning opportunity. Rotations in our ER are consistently rated very highly by our residents. Apart from normal emergency duties, we are involved with patient admissions, provide neonatal, pediatric and adult code blue services for the hospital and tend to do almost all of our own fracture reductions. All of our emergency doctors are now qualified under the Canadian Emergency Ultrasounds Society.
