World Premiere of The Gender Lady: The Fabulous Dr. May Cohen

The world premiere of The Gender Lady: The Fabulous Dr. May Cohen will be on May 8, 2019 at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival, the largest Jewish film festival in the world. The film will screen at 6:00 p.m. at the Cineplex Empress Walk Theatre, 5095 Yonge Street, Toronto.

The documentary co-directed and co-produced by Dr. Cheryl Levitt and Dr. Barbara Lent explores how influential and inspirational Dr. Cohen has been in promoting gender issues in medical schools and the role of women doctors throughout the health sector.

A truly inspirational story, the film describes Dr. Cohen's move from a small community practice to academic family medicine (when the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster was still in its infancy); her strong social conscience; her commitment to advocacy on reproductive rights and women’s health; and her promotion of women physicians within the profession and academia.

Dr. Cohen's impact in Canada and internationally simply cannot be overstated. She demonstrated that it is possible for women to balance professional, family and personal interests — and change the world.

“She did what she needed to do, what she believed was right, and changed the world” said Sharon Hampson, (of Sharon, Lois and Bram fame; friend and former patient of Dr. Cohen’s).

Her contributions to the profession and to medical education have been recognized with many awards, including being inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2016, and being named as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2017. The College of Family Physicians of Canada had previously awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award in Family Medicine Research in 2008.

The premiere will be co-presented by the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. Tickets are available online at www.tjff.com.
