Successful Canadian Institutes of Health Research Funding Application for Hockey Fans in Training Team

Dr. Robert Petrella and the entire Hockey Fans in Training (Hockey FIT) team are thrilled to announce that their recent grant application to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research was successful!

Dr. Robert Petrella (Nominated Principal Applicant), Dr. Arya Sharma (Principal Applicant – Knowledge User, Scientific Director of the Canadian Obesity Network), and their entire team of Co-Applicants, Collaborators and Partners have been awarded $948,600 over 5 years for a project grant entitled: Hockey Fans in Training (Hockey FIT): A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of a gender-sensitized weight loss and healthy lifestyle program for men who are overweight or obese.

Co-Applicants and Collaborators include numerous individuals from Western University [Centre for Studies in Family Medicine (Dr. Robert Petrella, Dr. Dawn Gill, Dr. Lisa Fischer, Dr. Shannon Sibbald, Dr. Merrick Zwarenstein); Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (Dr. Saverio Stranges, Dr. Guangyong Zou); School of Kinesiology (Dr. Karen Danylchuk, Mr. Brendan Riggin – PhD(c)); School of Health Studies (Dr. Jennifer Irwin); School of Physical Therapy (Dr. Jacquelyn Marsh); Hospitality Services (Ms. Anne Zok)] and Brescia University College [School of Food & Nutritional Sciences (Dr. Danielle Battram, Dr. June Matthews)].

Hockey FIT a gender-sensitized weight loss and healthy lifestyle program that uses the powerful draw of being a fan of hockey teams to attract men. With this grant, the Hockey FIT team aims to provide definite evidence for the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability of the Hockey FIT program.
