Peter Sabiri, DDS 2021 presents at the 2019 Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis

PeterThe Hinman Student Research Symposium is a national meeting that showcases research in the field of dentistry by dental students, residents and graduate trainees from over 60 dental schools across North America.

Peter Sabiri was chosen to represent the Schulich Dentistry Research Program at the prestigious Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis, Tennessee November 1-3. Peter (supervised by Dr. Doug Hamilton), was awarded this opportunity during Schulich Dentistry’s Annual Research Day by placing in the top 3 poster presentations.

During the symposium, Peter gave a poster presentation on his research work entitled: ‘Epsilon Sarcoglycan: a Potential Mediator of Fibroblast Cell Adhesion’.

Peter wanted to thank “Dr. Douglas Hamilton and all the members of the Hamilton lab as well as the Schulich Dentistry Research Program and the Ontario Dental Association for giving me this incredible opportunity. It has certainly expanded my interest in dental research. The Hinman Student Research Symposium gave me the rare opportunity to share my research with students and faculty from across North America and to explore different areas of research in the rapidly evolving field of dentistry. It was amazing and motivating to see some of the work that my colleagues from across America have been working on.”

Amr Alsabbagh, Dentistry Class of 2020, represented Schulich Dentistry at the 2019 CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program

AmrThe CDA took place during the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Convention in Saskatchewan, SK, from September 12 to 14, 2019. Amr (supervised by Christina McCord) was awarded this opportunity during Schulich Dentistry’s Annual Research Day by placing in the top three poster presentations. His presentation was ‘Surrogate markers for high risk human papillomavirus infection in oral epithelial dysplasia’

At the 2019 CDA/Dentsply Sirona Student Clinician Research Program, Amr was honoured to win the Pierre Fauchard Academy Canadian Annual Scholarship for “outstanding scholarship and clinical research at the [dentistry] undergraduate level”.

Amr thanked Dr. Christina McCord "She has been a wonderful supervisor and a great mentor, and many thanks goes to her, as well as Drs. Mark Darling and Zia Khan throughout this whole endeavour. Additionally, I am grateful for the Schulich Dentistry Research Program for giving me the opportunity to pursue dental research during the summers after my first and second year. Despite having two extremely busy summers, I can confidently say they were rewarding and I now have a publication to show for it.”

Amr’s paper was published on October 14, 2019, in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology titled: "Surrogate Markers for High Risk Human Papillomavirus Infection in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia: A Comparison of p16, Ki-67 and ProExC."

2019 Quintessence Research Award - Shawna Kim

Dr. Doug Hamilton, Assistant Dean, Dentistry Research, presented Dentistry's 2019 Quintessence Research Award to Shawna Kim, DDS 2019, on the recommendation of the Research Committee, following nominations by faculty supervisors.  This is an annual award to a graduating dental student who has been exemplary in research in the undergraduate dental program.

Shawna has been awarded Summer Research Studentships for 2 years.  She has a strong ability to think critically, which is required not only in research, but also in the clinic.

In the first project, she investigated how periostin influenced fibronectin synthesis in human gingival fibroblasts, which has significant relevance for gingival regeneration. This research was included in a publication (Kim SS et al. Periostin modulates collagen and fibronectin synthesis, but not myofibroblast differentiation during gingival healing. In press, Scientific Reports, November 2018).
