DART hosted their first Journal Club of the 2016-2017 year on Nov 2, 2016. Participants came with questions/critiques/comments in tow to have a discussion about the paper - Delivery of Apical Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Root Canals of Mature Teeth. Dental Faculty and students came to mix, mingle, and chat with fellow colleagues about dental research and training! New students had a chance to ask questions about summer research and research opportunities at Western (among other topics). DART colleagues were happy to introduce themselves and answer all questions! 5:30-7:30pm The Wave, UCC
Jul 13 - Journal Club
Dr. Yara Hosein, Dentistry Postdoctoral Fellow, led the article discussion on ‘The effect of design on the primary stability of dental implants’. Dr. S. Jeffrey Dixon, as faculty representative, provided his clinical and research expertise on the topic. A discussion session followed during dinner between the 17 attendees (summer dental research students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows).
Dr. Doug Hamilton led the Lunch and Learn session on ‘Critical Thinking in Clinic versus Research’. Dr. Hamilton presented on the need for critical assessments in a clinical and research setting, and facilitated a successful discussion among trainees. The session was attended by summer dental research students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
As a kick-off to the start of Dentistry’s Summer Dental Research Program, DART hosted a Meet & Greet Mixer for faculty, researchers, graduate students and the incoming summer research students. This event allowed trainees and faculty to network in an informal setting, and formally introduced new summer research students to the program.
Apr 27 - Journal Club
Daniel Madiac (DDS 2016) presented a Periodontics article at DART’s first journal club of 2016. Daniel led the paper discussion with the help of Dr. Al-Osman, who graciously agreed to offer his expertise on the subject area. Dental students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows who were in attendance also partook in the critical analysis of the clinical research paper.
Jan 28 - Lunch and learn
Dr. Les Kalman was invited to share his experiences in a session entitled ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Dentistry’. Dr. Kalman provided information about the funding opportunities that exist for the invention and scientific testing of novel products within the dental field. This session included the collaborative efforts between academics and industry. This session was attended by dental students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
