In Memoriam: Dr. John (Jack) McLister

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Dr. Jack McLister on October 10, 2020.

Dr. McLister was an alumnus and faculty member at Schulich Dentistry for close to four decades and will be remembered for his commitment to students and patients in the undergraduate clinic.

“Dr. McLister’s dedication to the advancement of the profession was exemplary and his contributions have impacted thousands of clinicians in Ontario, across Canada and beyond,” said Dr. Bertha Garcia, Vice Dean and Director at Schulich Dentistry.

He graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Western University in 1975, remaining in London to open a family practice, where he practised for nearly 38 years with his colleague Dr. Susan Rumble. He was actively involved in the Dental Alumni Society, sitting as an executive for a number of years.

Most recently, Dr. McLister served as the President of the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) in 2016-17, representing more than 9,000 dentists across the province. He was very involved with the ODA in different capacities throughout his career, sitting on various committees as well as the Board of Directors. In 2019, he received the Barnabus W. Day Award for Distinguished Service by the ODA, one of the most prestigious awards in organized dentistry.

In 2008, in recognition of his service to and impact on organized dentistry, the John C. McLister Service Award was established in his honour, granted to a graduating dental student who demonstrates “outstanding leadership and service to the profession and peers.”
