Her fellowship was sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
In 2007, Dr. Shoesmith joined Dr. Michael Strong in the London Motor Neuron Diseases Clinic, where she focuses on conducting clinical trials in ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis / Lou Gehrig's disease). She also has a general neuromuscular clinic and an EMG clinic. In 2010, Dr. Shoesmith became the Motor Neuron Diseases Clinic Director. Dr. Shoesmith is actively involved in teaching of residents and medical students. She is the neuromuscular education coordinator for residents and fellows. She is also a co-director of the neurosciences curriculum for medical students at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
Dr. Shoesmith's main research interests are in the field of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). She is particularly interested in clinical trials evaluating treatments to improve prognosis in ALS and treatments that ameliorate symptoms in ALS.
