An MD graduate of Western University, Dr.McLachlan trained in neurology at the same institution followed by a Medical Research Council of Canada fellowship in neurophysiology at the Montreal Neurological Institute and McGill University. He joined CNS in 1983 as a member of the Epilepsy Group. From 2000-2003 he worked in the Middle East as Clinical Director of the EEG Laboratory and neurologist on the Medical Service of Shaikh Khalifa Medical Centre in Abu Dhabi.
Dr. McLachlan has been an invited lecturer in numerous Canadian cities and internationally in countries such as Japan, Saudi Arabia, India, Oman, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates. He is the only person to hold a four-year term as President of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy in 1995-1999.
Dr. McLachlan's clinical research includes studies of the phenomenology of seizures, psychological issues in epilepsy and surgical management of epilepsy.
