Jeremi Laski completed his Honours BSc in Biology from Western University.  He is currently working towards an MSc in Ovarian Cancer Biology under the supervision of Dr. Trevor Shepherd. Although progress has been made in the fight against ovarian cancer, chemotherapeutics used for high-grade serous cases are ineffective at most times. This holds particularly true when the primary tumour spreads into the peritoneal cavity in aggregates known as spheroids. These spheroids have been shown to up regulate autophagy processes, allowing them to resist chemotherapy treatments. My project focuses on the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its potential role in mediating autophagy. We hope that by uncovering the mechanisms governing autophagy regulation in ovarian cancer spheroids, we can target a vulnerability to further develop therapeutics against this type of malignancy.
