Welcome to Dr. Bogumil Karas

Dr. Bogumil Karas has joined the Department of Biochemistry as an Assistant Professor. In addition to promoting research in the Synthetic Biology theme area, he will contribute to undergraduate and graduate courses and will have an active role in supervision of research trainees.

Following doctoral training at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Dr. Karas pursued postdoctoral studies at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) in San Diego where he was subsequently appointed as a Staff Scientist. Working with pioneers in the field of Synthetic Biology at the JCVI, Dr. Karas contributed to the development of new technologies for large scale genome engineering and genome transfer and landmark achievements such as the construction of a minimal cell with a synthetic genome. In addition to an impressive publication record (including papers in journals such as Science, Nature and ACS Synthetic Biology), Dr. Karas has obtained patents and is co-founder of Designer Microbes Inc, a start-up company that will exploit synthetic biology for microbial engineering.
