Biography

Dr. Davy Cheng graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto in 1983 and completed his internal medicine internship and anesthesia residency in 1987. He joined as Faculty at the Toronto Western Hospital, University of Toronto after a Clinical Research Fellowship in 1988 and a Cardiovascular Anesthesia Fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City in 1989. Prior to his appointment in 2001 at Western University, London, Dr. Cheng held the position of Professor and Deputy Chief of Anesthesiology at the Toronto General Hospital, University of Toronto and as Medical Director, Cardiovascular Surgery Program, University Health Network (UHN), Toronto. 

Dr. Cheng is recognized as a world expert in perioperative outcomes and resource utilization in cardiac surgery/anesthesia, blood management, minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery, and perioperative evidence-based medicine. His pioneer work in fast track cardiac anesthesia and recovery has become the standard of cardiac anesthesia and recovery practice around the world. Dr. Cheng established the Evidence-Based Perioperative Clinical Outcomes Research Group (EPiCOR) and the MEDICI Centre (Medical Evidence, Decision Integrity, Clinical Impact) at Western University and the London Teaching Hospitals, and continues to release a number of pivotal publications to direct evidence-based medical and surgical practices. He is a recognized healthcare leader in the forefront of research, practice and healthcare policy. As Principal Investigator and Co-investigator, Dr. Cheng has been awarded over $5.8M in peer-reviewed grants and over $1.6M in non-peer reviewed grants. He has published over 144 peer-reviewed scientific papers in high impact journals and 45 book / chapters (h-index 43, i10-index 101). Dr. Cheng holds positions on several Editorial Boards including; anesthesia (CJA), cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia (JCTVA) and cardiac surgery (INNOVATIONS). He Co-Chaired the Steering Committee and Expert Consensus Panel for the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (ISMICS) as well as the European Association of Cardiothoracic Society (EACTS) in practice guideline development. Dr. Cheng has been invited as a Visiting Professor to over 95 Universities, Cardiac Centers and Conferences nationally and internationally.

In 2014, Dr. Cheng was elected the highest award by the German Society of Anesthesiologists and Intensive Care as its Honorary Member. In 2013, Dr. Cheng was designated as CCPE (Canadian Certified Physician Executive) by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the Canadian Society of Physician Executives (CSPE), and in 2014 was honored with the CSPE Excellence in Medical Leadership Award. In 2013, Dr. Cheng was elected to the World Health Organization (WHO) GIEESC (Global Initiative for Emergency & Essential Surgical Care) Anaesthesia Committee. In 2011, he was elected President of the Association of Canadian University Departments of Anesthesiology (ACUDA), and was elected as the North American Representative to the Scientific Affairs Committee at World Federation Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA). In 2010, Dr. Cheng was selected as the Inaugural Rotman-Longwoods Scholar, for demonstrated special interest in understanding and applying practical strategies of knowledge translation and knowledge transfer. Also in 2010, he was also selected to receive the CAS Research Recognition Award for his sustained major contributions in anesthesia research in Canada. In 2007, Dr. Cheng was the first anesthesiologist inducted to Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS) in recognition of his great accomplishment and achievement in the academic health sciences in Canada. In 2010 he also received the prestigious Joint Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) Award for the outstanding leadership and exemplary contributions to the success of the committee’s initiatives; aligning the strategic directions of London Teaching Hospitals to improve patient care and outcomes. Dr. Cheng serves as Chair of the Ontario Blood Advisory Committee (OBAC) at the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care (MOHLTC); and was a member on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS). He serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology (SCA), and as an Executive member on the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists (ACA) and IARS Board of Trustees.
