Congratulations: 2020 Awards of Excellence recipients, Tom Chrones and Silvia Penuela

This past week, the Schulich Awards of Excellence were announced. It is with great pride and excitement that we congratulate Tom Chrones and Silvia Penuela on their selection as two of the 2020 winners.

tom-2-edit-resize.jpgTom Chrones (pictured centre) was awarded the Continuous Excellence Individual Award for his years of outstanding service and dedication to the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Schulich and Western as a whole. Not a day passes in the ACB Admin Office that you do not hear the words "Where is Tom?" or "Have you seen Tom?" from staff, faculty and students alike. This illustrates how integral of a role Tom plays in the daily functioning of ACB and the impact he has. It’s safe to say that this was a much deserved award and that we as a Department thank and appreciate Tom for all that he does.

Dr. Silvia Penuela was awarded the Dean's Award of Excellence - Junior Faculty for her exceptional performance as a researcher and mentor. Dr. Penuela was recruited to the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in 2014 when she joined us as an Assistant Professor. Since then, she has built a strong cell biology research program, made significant contributions within her research field, and has become a highly regarded scientist and collaborator both nationally and internationally. Dr. Penuela has also shown her dedication through the mentoring and training of her research trainees, who both past and present speak with glowing admiration. It is without question that Dr. Penuela has made a lasting impact not only on her trainees, but within the department, on fellow faculty, at the university, and within the scientific community itself. We thank Dr. Penuela for her ongoing contributions, and are honored to have an award-winning scholar such as herself as part of our Department.

Tom and Silvia will be honored along with 40 other award recipients at Schulich’s annual Awards of Excellence Dinner. Due to the current circumstances, the dinner has been postponed and is now tentatively scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 30th at RBC Place London.
