Award: Schulich Dentistry student earns coveted spot at international competition

Vladyslav Podskalniy, Dentistry Class of 2023, will be representing Canada at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR)’s Undergraduate Hatton Competition.

He received this honour after winning the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR) and the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR)’s Student Research Presentation Award. An added bonus for Podskalniy is the opportunity he received to also present his research for the IADR competition.

“It is hard for me to find the words to describe what an honour it is to represent Canada at an international conference,” Podskalniy shared. “I am incredibly grateful for my research team and mentors who provided me with valuable guidance, knowledge and support to strengthen my research project. I’m excited to represent the quality research being conducted at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.”

Podskalniy’s project studies the impact of neighbourhood level sociodemographic variables on dental treatment outcomes in children. He hopes to build on his findings and contribute to a robust profile of socioeconomic disparities in oral care in Southwestern Ontario.

Podskalniy conducted his research as part of the School’s Summer Dental Research Opportunity Program, an opportunity for students enrolled in the Doctor of Dentistry program to contribute to clinical and basic science research being performed in Schulich Dentistry.

Candidates for the IADR Hatton Competition will present their research in an oral presentation format and participate in a question and answer period.

The IADR Awards Review Committee will judge the submissions on July 20, 2021, with consideration given to originality and design of the project, quality of the data and poster presentation, sustainability of the methods of analysis used, scientific value of the work and overall demonstrated mastery of the subject.
