Announcement: Dr. William (Bill) McCauley has been appointed as the Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs

We are pleased to announce that Dr. William (Bill) McCauley has been appointed as the Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs, at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2025.

Dr. McCauley graduated cum laude from the Doctor of Medicine program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 1987. He obtained specialty certification in Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1991 and obtained a Master of Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1999. He is currently an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and practices urgent and emergency medicine in London.

Dr. McCauley has held several administrative positions, including Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director from 1996 to 2004, and Medical Advisor in Practice Assessment and Enhancement at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) from 2004 to 2019. Building on the work from his master’s thesis, Dr. McCauley’s position at the CPSO involved assisting physicians with incorporating change into their practice in an evidence-informed manner. His approach to helping physicians is one that he describes as physician-centered, taking an interest in the context, environment and other contributing factors that add to the challenges of professional practice. He has found that an open, honest, transparent and supportive approach to working with physicians greatly enhances the positive relationships that are necessary to encourage practice change.

Dr. McCauley has worked with many national and international organizations with an interest in assessing physicians’ practice, continuing professional development and changing practice patterns. These organizations include the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada and the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. McCauley on his appointment.
