Announcement: Dr. Stewart Harris reappointed as the Canadian Diabetes Association Chair in Diabetes Management
I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Stewart Harris to his third term as the Canadian Diabetes Association Chair in Diabetes Management at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University effective January 1,
Dr. Harris graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Microbial Biology from the University of Calgary where he earned his medical degree in 1982. He received a Master’s in Public Health in Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, before completing his fellowship in preventative medicine in 1987. Since first joining Schulich Medicine & Dentistry in 1995, Dr. Harris has built an international reputation as a leading diabetes clinician and scientist. He is a Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine, Epidemiology & Biostatistics with a cross-appointment in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism, he is the Ian McWhinney Chair of Family Medicine Studies, and is a research scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute.
Since his appointment in 2008 as the inaugural Canadian Diabetes Association Chair in Diabetes Management, Dr. Harris has played a central and critical leadership role in the development and implementation of a national diabetes management strategy securing over $25 million in research grant funding.
As Principal Investigator of the Diabetes Alliance at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, his research focuses on developing and evaluating strategies to improve clinical outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes across three program areas: clinical trials, Indigenous health, and hypoglycemia. He has published more than 240 peer-reviewed papers and is an actively practicing diabetologist at St. Joseph’s Health Care London. His dedication to student training and mentorship is evident through the supervision of more than 20 graduate students and fellows.
Dr. Harris was the recipient of the Dr. Gerald S. Wong Service Award in 2007, co-recipient of the Dean’s Award of Excellence, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2010 and 2018, and recipient of the Hellmuth Prize for Achievement in Research, Western University in 2014.
