Dr. Mark Awuku to receive honorary degree from the University of Windsor

Dr. Mark Awuku, associate professor, Department of Paediatrics, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Windsor at the Faculty of Nursing Convocation on June 17, 2016. He is also being awarded the Danielle Grenier Member Recognition Award for 2016 from the Canadian Paediatric Society.

Dr. Awuku graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School in 1975 and spent five years working at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, following an internship and paediatric residency in Ghana. He arrived in Windsor in 1990 following a five-year term as a consulting pediatrician in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Awuku recently completed a four-year term as Assistant Dean for Faculty and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Campus.

He is also well known by Windsor parents for his six-year term as Chief of Paediatrics at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital, and is the current Chair of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society. Dr. Awuku is also a member of the Caring for Kids New to Canada (CKNC) task force, as well as a member of the Provincial Expert Panel for Sickle Cell Disease.

His passion for teaching has won him numerous awards, including HSC’s LOM Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, and HSC’s Critical Care ICU Award. He has received the Best Teacher Award from the Department of Paediatrics, as well as the PARO Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award in 2005.  

Dr. Awuku’s other accomplishments include the 2008 Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Student Advocate Award, and the 2011 Windsor Essex County Chamber of Commerce Business Professional of the Year Award. He was also awarded the Green Shield Scholar of Medical Education for being a renowned medical educator, his contributions to the development of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Distributed Education program and the success of the Windsor clerkship program.

He has served as Clerkship Coordinator for Schulich Medicine & Dentistry; as well as the School’s Academic Director for paediatrics, and Acting Associate Dean from 2010 -2011.

Dr. Awuku is also being awarded the Danielle Grenier Member Recognition Award for 2016 from the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS). The award recognizes his outstanding contributions to the CPS as chair of the Continuing Professional Development Committee. More information on this award is available on the CPS website.
