Homecoming 2015 Dean’s Distinguished Lecturer announced
We are pleased to announce that Bonnie Schmidt, PhD’93, has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Dean’s Distinguished Lecture award. Schmidt is the President and Founder of Let’s Talk Science — an award-winning, national and charitable organization dedicated to science education and outreach in support of youth development.
In the early 1990s, when Schmidt was still a PhD Candidate in the Department of Physiology, she stood out for her passion to make science accessible to students at the pre-university level. She started Let’s Talk Physiology, the predecessor of Let’s Talk Science, during her training at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
Since graduating from the School in 1993, Schmidt’s vision for Let’s Talk Science has grown into an exceptionally successful organization that creates and delivers unique learning programs and services that engage children, youth and educators in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Let’s Talk Science recruits volunteers at the graduate and undergraduate level to help bring science to elementary and high schools across the country.
Schmidt has had a significant impact on science literature and education. She has published numerous papers in education journals, and presented at several national and international conferences including: the National Space Science Summit, the Canadian Science Policy Conference, and the OECD Conference on Global Science.
As a part of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s exciting lineup of Homecoming celebrations, Schmidt will give a thought-provoking presentation at the 2015 Dean’s Distinguished Lecture, taking place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. In the evening, Schmidt will receive her award at the Dean’s Gala along with the Alumni of Distinction Recipients.
The event is open to all alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members. Please register online by Friday, September 18.
