Dr. Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro and Dr. Andrew House receive a 2015 President’s Award

Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is proud to congratulate Dr. Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro and Dr. Andrew House for receiving a 2015 President’s Award, presented by Murray Glendining, president and CEO, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

Dr. Hernandez-Alejandro, associate professor, Department of Surgery, and surgical director of Liver Transplantation at LHSC, was presented with the President’s Award for Innovation. He was recognized for bringing a novel surgical technique – Associated Liver Partition and Portal Vein Ligation for Staged Hepatectomy (ALPPS) – to North America, which allows for the treatment of liver cancers that were previously inoperable.

This technique has been used on 32 patients with no mortality or morbidity, and Dr. Hernandez-Alejandro has published more than 10 peer-reviewed manuscripts on ALPPS. He is considered a North American pioneer in this life-saving procedure.

Dr. Andrew House, chair, Division of Nephrology, was presented with the 2015 President’s Award for Physician Leadership for his mentorship, role as a patient advocate and his volunteer work training hospital staff during the implementation of Healthcare Undergoing Optimization (HUGO) – an electronic patient record system.

With a focus on education, Dr. House encourages an open environment for discussion amongst his team members and has served as a mentor to several medical students. He is known for his compassionate approach with patients and their family members, serving as a role model for his peers.
