Dr. Peter Williamson reappointed to the position of Tanna Schulich Chair of Neuroscience & Mental Health

Dr. Peter Williamson has been reappointed to the position of Tanna Schulich Chair of Neuroscience & Mental Health, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University.

Dr. Williamson completed his MD at Western University in 1977, and received his D.Psy from the University of Toronto in 1984. He joined the University of Toronto in 1984, as an Assistant Professor and then joined the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1988. Dr. Williamson became an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in 1992, and a Professor at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University in 1998.

Dr. Williamson has devoted his research to the final common pathways of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. In collaboration with Dr. Dick Drost and other researchers at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Dr. Williamson was the first to report elevated glutamatergic metabolites with 1H MRS and second to report increased membrane breakdown products with 31P MRS in schizophrenic patients.

Dr. Williamson was the recipient of the Dean’s Award of Excellence (1994 and 1999), the J.M. Cleghorn Award for Excellence and Leadership in Clinical Research, Canadian Psychiatric Association (2001), a Distinguished Fellowship, American Psychiatric Association (2005), and a Distinguished Life Fellowship, American Psychiatric Association (2014).
