Updated: August 6, 2021

Non-medical/dental students (Graduate Studies, BMSc/Neuroscience)

With the beginning of the new academic year drawing near, it has been confirmed by London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London that all students working in labs, offices, clinics or other settings in any of LHSC’s or St. Joseph’s hospitals must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

LHSC requires students to have one vaccination prior to beginning a placement, with the second dose completed by November 1. St. Joseph’s requires students to have one vaccination prior to September 1, with the second dose completed by November 1. For more information on the LHSC policy, visit: https://www.lhsc.on.ca/student-affairs-non-medical/health-requirements. St. Joseph’s is currently updating its Pre-placement requirements web page, and students are asked to check the site regularly for updates: https://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/students/pre-placement-requirements

Any student who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons should refer to these policies for further requirements.

Western strongly encourages all students to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible. Students who are not vaccinated may be precluded from a placement of their choice if the practice site requires proof of vaccination status.

Western will operate an on-campus vaccination centre later this summer to accommodate first and second doses for students, staff and faculty. More information will be posted here: https://www.uwo.ca/coronavirus/

The health and safety of our campus is a shared responsibility. We must take thoughtful and persistent steps to take care of each other, our community and ourselves.

Medical Students

With the beginning of the new academic year drawing near, it has been confirmed by London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and St. Joseph’s Health Care London that all medical students must be vaccinated against COVID-19 if they are to participate in a clinical placement in any of LHSC’s or St. Joseph’s hospitals.

LHSC requires students to have one vaccination prior to beginning a placement, with the second dose completed by November 1. SJHC requires students to have one vaccination prior to September 1, with the second dose completed by November 1. Windsor Regional Hospital announced on August 5, that beginning on September 7, any one who works or volunteers at the hospital will be asked to declare their vaccination status. Individuals with only one dose will be able to continue working without testing, provided they are willing to receive a second dose when offered or when able to do so, and within four weeks from their first dose.

Those individuals who have only one vaccination and aren’t willing to get a second, are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons, or are choosing not to be vaccinated, will be required to participate in the self-administered COVID-19 testing program. Individuals will be required to be asymptomatic and have completed a negative test prior to entering the worksite. Testing kits will be provided by the hospital. We are currently gathering more details on the access to those kits. You can view more information online; a Citrix login is required: https://www.wrh.on.ca/loginboard?r=/documents/150/COVID_Vaccine_Policy.pdf

The School fully expects that other hospitals in the region will be amending their vaccine policies, and we will do our best to provide the information to you as it becomes available.

If you are unable, for medical reasons, to be vaccinated you will need to provide documentation from your practitioner to the Learner Experience Office.

Students are also encouraged to consult the Council of Faculties of Medicine Immunization Policy, which has been updated to include guidance on COVID-19 vaccines: https://www.schulich.uwo.ca/med_dent_admissions/docs/COFM-Immunization-Policy-%202021.pdf
