GENERAL OVERVIEW
During the year 3 Clerkship, undergraduate medical students at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry must complete a minimum of 4 weeks of clinical training in a small or mid-sized community outside of London or Windsor. Students have the option of completing up to 12 weeks of clinical training outside of London and Windsor. Clerks have opportunities in SWOMEN communities for placements in:
- Obstetrics & Gynecology
- Paediatrics
- Psychiatry
There are a limited number of clerkship placements available for each block in each community. Priority for these placements will be given to students who have not yet met the curriculum requirements. Requests will then be accommodated on a first come first served basis.

CLERKSHIP ROTATIONS
(Year 3 Students at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry)
The SWOMEN Rural Regional program provides accommodation and travel funding for clerks at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who complete placements in Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Psychiatry in one of our SWOMEN rural or regional communities. These placements may be 4 to 6 weeks in length.
ACCOMMODATION GUIDELINES
SWOMEN rents accommodation for clerks in the major training communities during their clerkship rotations, except for St. Thomas. Clerks who travel to St. Thomas prefer to commute since it is a short drive. In Stratford, Sarnia, Chatham and Owen Sound, accommodation is provided in an apartment or house shared with other learners. Each individual bedroom has a separate lock. All accommodation is located in close proximity to the local hospital. For more information, click on the link below:
Prior to the placement, clerks will receive an email to inquire about their requirements for accommodation. Clerks should contact Mary Peterson in Undergraduate Medical Education if they have special accommodation circumstances.
TRAVEL GUIDELINES
SWOMEN funds travel for clerks as follows:
- All travel costs will be reimbursed in accordance with the travel reimbursement policies of The University of Western Ontario.
- To claim travel upon completion of your placement, please use the following link for the travel form: Travel Expense Form.
- Travel costs will be paid for one round trip from London or Windsor to a rural regional training site within Southwestern Ontario where the clerk stays for the duration of the rotation.
- Train or bus fares, parking, and taxi costs are eligible travel expenses. Receipts or original tickets (train or bus) must be included to receive reimbursement for these travel expenses.
- Travel costs will be reimbursed to attend educational activities during the rotation, i.e. attendance required at an Academic Half Day in London or Windsor.
- Commuting travel to and from London or Windsor will be paid to a student when the rotation location permits the student to commute on a daily or a regular basis and accommodation is not provided.
- All students are expected to complete an evaluation of their placement prior to receiving reimbursement for their travel.
- here is an example of the formula for travel reimbusement. One round trip from London to Sarnia would result in a claim of $114 (200 kms x $0.57 = $114).
