Chatham-Kent Health Alliance
Postgraduate & Undergraduate teaching program

The Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) is in partnership with over 40 communities throughout Southwestern Ontario including Chatham. They provide rural regional medical education and training experiences to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, The University of Western Ontario, located in London, Ontario Canada.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is an acute care public hospital with 216 beds at the Chatham campus, and 62 beds at the Wallaceburg campus. Mental Health & Addictions Program is one department at the Alliance providing a multidisciplinary treatment setting, emergency consultation, liaison psychiatry, ACT and chronic and tertiary care psychiatry with clinical outreach also available.

Click here to view more details about PGE RotationsStudents who choose placement at the Chatham site will enjoy training that is influenced by a strong academic and research background, and will be exposed to a wide variety of patients, some with rare mental illness. They will actively participate in the assessment and management of those patients using a multidisciplinary and shared-care model.

Inpatient Psychiatric Services consist of a 21 hospital bed unit for patients with serious chronic illnesses. Electroconvulsive therapy is scheduled through the inpatient unit and students are invited to attend these sessions. The unit is served by a multi-disciplinary team which includes the attending psychiatrist, social worker, OT, RNs and RPNs. Most of the admissions are individuals who have been assessed and medically cleared in the emergency room. The psychiatrists in addition to attending the inpatient unit also respond to consultation requests from the medical and surgical programs.

The Psychiatric Program also has a collaborative relationship with the local police team called the HELP team. Out reach programsin geriatric psychiatry include in home assessments & care to nursing homes through video-care.


Outpatient Psychiatric Services have four psychiatrists provide psychiatric consultation and follow-up at the outpatient Psychiatric Clinic. A family doctor in the department provides specialized care in chronic pain management.

A multi-disciplinary team provides specialized treatment modalities including: Memory Disorders, Dementia, Clozaril Clinic, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Program, a comprehensive adult and youth Addictions Program, Concurrent disorders, Problem Gambling, Eating Disorders, Crisis Program and Early Psychosis Program.

Mental Health & Addictions Program is located in Chatham with satellite clinical office situated at Sydenham Campus in Wallaceburg. Services include: brief individual treatment, group therapy, and several specialty programs.

Residents and medical students will participate in Tele-health through video-conferencing. Chatham is Canada’s leader in Tele-psychiatry. .A clinical trials centre which has conducted over 45 phase 1 to 4 trials over the last 10years provides an opportunity to learn basic to advanced research skills. Residents & Medical students regularly publish papers & posters at academic meetings.

Diverse experiential opportunities exist for students who choose their clinical experience at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Department of Psychiatry. Students will actively participate in consultation, follow-up treatment of psychiatric inpatients, serious, chronically mentally ill outpatients, and psychiatric crisis emergency room services. As well, opportunities exist to participate in psychiatric consultation and treatment at the Chatham-Kent ACT office and at St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. The program could be tailored to suit the student’s clinical, academic and research interests.

Electives & RCPSC approved Core rotation opportunities are available to residents & medical students from a week to 1 year.
