GENERAL OVERVIEW

Click here for more detaiilsPre-clerkship summer electives are designed to introduce medical students to the practice of medicine in rural and regional communities in Southwestern Ontario.  These electives, which are open to all Ontario medical students, assist students in developing their clinical knowledge and practicing their skills in clinical settings outside the teaching centre.  Because the electives are in rural and regional communities, these opportunities are within Family Medicine clinical settings. 

Medical student applicants should be aware that, although there is funding provided for travel and accommodation, they must have access to their own transportation as the electives are in communities that are not reached through public transportation. 

  • There are a limited number of electives available.   
  • Applications are accepted from January 1 to February 29.
  • Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Students - Electives will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis
  • Other Ontario University Students - Electives will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis.

Our Educational Goals are:  

  1. To assist students in developing their clinical skills and knowledge outside of a tertiary teaching centre. 
     
  2. To provide an enrichment experience for students with an interest in rural regional medicine at a time when they are considering future career paths.
     
  3.  To provide undergraduate medical students with an opportunity to discover the joys and challenges of living and working in a rural and regional community.

Summer Pre-Clerkship Electives

The SWOMEN Rural Regional program provides opportunities for undergraduate medical students from all Ontario universities to participate in a pre-clerkship summer elective in one of our SWOMEN rural or regional communities.

  • These electives are 4 weeks in length.
  • As there are a limited number of positions available, these will be awarded on the basis of first-come-first-served. Applications are accepted beginning January 1st.
  • Students will be provided with accommodation and a stipend for travel.

 

Accomodation Guidelines

SWOMEN rents accommodation for students as required during their electives. This accommodation may be provided in an apartment or house shared with other learners. In some communities, accommodation may be provided in someone’s home as a "bed and breakfast" arrangement.

Prior to the placement, students will receive an email to inquire about their requirements for accommodation. Some students may choose to stay with family or friends during their electives.

Students should contact Mary Peterson in Undergraduate Medical Education if they have special accommodation circumstances.

 

Travel Guidelines

SWOMEN funds travel for students as follows:

  1. All students who participate in a pre-clerkship summer elective MUST have a car.
  2. All travel costs will be reimbursed in accordance with the travel reimbursement policies of The University of Western Ontario.
  3. To claim travel upon completion of your placement, please use the following link for the travel form: Travel Expense Form.
  4. Travel costs will be paid for one round trip from the student's home university to a rural regional training site within Southwestern Ontario where the student will stay for the duration of the rotation.
  5. Commuting travel will be paid to a student when the rotation location permits the student to commute on a daily or a regular basis and accommodation is not provided.
  6.  All students are expected to complete an evaluation of their elective before they receive travel funding.
