SWOMEN RURAL REGIONAL TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION POLICY
(Revised Jan. 2012)
The SWOMEN Rural Regional program provides opportunities for undergraduate medical students at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry to participate in an elective in one of our SWOMEN rural or regional communities. These electives are 4 weeks in length.
Students will be provided with accommodation and a stipend for travel.
ACCOMMODATION GUIDELINES
SWOMEN rents accommodation for students as required during their electives. This accommodation may be provided in an apartment or house shared with other learners. In some communities, accommodation may be provided in someone’s home as a “bed and breakfast” arrangement.
Prior to the placement, students will receive an email to inquire about their requirements for accommodation. Some students may choose to stay with family or friends during their electives.
Students should contact Mary Peterson in Undergraduate Medical Education if they have special accommodation circumstances.
TRAVEL GUIDELINES
SWOMEN funds travel for students as follows:
- Although it is not mandatory, it is strongly advised that students who participate in a SWOMEN elective have a car. There is limited availability for electives in communities where a car is not required.
- All travel costs will be reimbursed in accordance with the travel reimbursement policies of The University of Western Ontario.
- To claim travel upon completion of your placement, please use the following link for the travel form: Travel Expense Form.
- Travel costs will be paid for one round trip from London or Windsor to a rural regional training site within Southwestern Ontario where the student stays for the duration of the rotation.
- Commuting travel will be paid to a student when the rotation location permits the student to commute on a daily or a regular basis and accommodation is not provided.
- Train or bus fares, parking, and taxi costs are eligible travel expenses. Receipts or original tickets (train or bus) must be included to receive reimbursement for these travel expenses.
- All students are expected to complete an evaluation of their elective before they receive travel funding.
- Expense reports must be completed and submitted no later than sixty (60) days after the end date of the community rotation.
