GENERAL INFORMATION
SWOMEN welcomes students from all Ontario medical schools to apply for electives in our Rural Regional Electives Program. Current elective opportunities available through the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) include:
-
Anaesthesia - Emergency Medicine
- Family Medicine
- General Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties
- Internal Medicine
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Paediatrics
- Pathology
- Psychiatry
These electives assist students to further develop their clinical knowledge and practice their skills in clinical settings outside of the teaching centres. Students work with enthusiastic and knowledgeable preceptors who have academic appointments with the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
- Ontario Medical students must have completed a core rotation in the discipline for which they are applying in accordance with the policies of the Visiting Student Electives Program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
- All electives must be a minimum of four weeks in order to be eligible for funding assistance with travel and accommodation. Students can apply for several electives of a minimum of two weeks, either in one community or in numerous communities.
- We will do our best to match you with a preceptor that has similar interests. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
TRANSPORTATION
It is recommended that applicants have a car, but some communities have public transportation. Placements depend on preceptor availability.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation will be arranged either in a shared apartment or house or in a bed and breakfast establishment. Funding will be provided for travel and accommodation following completion of the elective. Although it is recommended that students have access to personal transportation, there are some communities where public transportation is available.
