Fourth-Year Electives

Elective rotations are available in the Department of Surgery for fourth-year Western University medical students.  These rotations are offered as 2-week electives annually in the specialties of Cardiac Surgery, General Sugery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatric General Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery.  The student electives are determined by a lottery system which is facilitated through the Western University Undergraduate Medical Education Office.  Students may request a team or preceptor after their elective space in the Department of Surgery is confirmed.

Visiting Student Electives 

Visiting students may request electives in the surgical specialties of Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Paediatric General Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. The elective period in the Department of Surgery is two, three or four weeks' maximum based on availability.  

All visiting student elective applications are processed through the AFMC Student Portal. Elective offerings and all application criteria for electives in the Department of Surgery are available in the Portal.
