Dr. James Calvin appointed as Chair/Chief, Department of Medicine

Subject to the approval of the Provost and Vice President (Academic), the President and Vice-Chancellor, and the Board of Governors of Western University, we are pleased to announce that Dr. James Calvin has been appointed as Chair/Chief, Department of Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London, effective November 1, 2013.

Dr. Calvin graduated from medical school from Dalhousie University in 1975. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Critical Care in 1980 at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. This was followed by a residency in Cardiology at the University of Ottawa in 1981. In 1983, following post-doctoral training at the Cardiovascular Research Institute as a Medical Research Council Fellow under Dr. Stanton A. Glantz at the University of California in San Francisco, California, he joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa as an Assistant Professor. He was recruited as an Associate Professor to the Department of Medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois in 1991. Dr. Calvin's previous administrative experience includes Section Director, Clinical Preventative Medicine, Rush University Medical Center (2012-present), Section Director, Adult Cardiovascular Medicine, Rush University Medical Center (2002-2012), Medical Director, Rush Heart Institute (2002-2005) and Division Chair, Adult Cardiology, Stroger Hospital of Cook County, Chicago (1999-2001).

Dr. Calvin is an internationally renowned scholar with career accomplishments encompassing more than 330 publications and book chapters. He serves as an external reviewer for the Medical Research Council of Canada, Canadian Heart Foundation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the American Health Journal. In 2012, Dr. Calvin completed a Physician Executive MBA from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Dr. Calvin was the recipient of the Department of Internal Medicine Teaching and Service Award; Rush University Medical Center (1994), the Governor's Commendation Award, Illinois Chapter, American College of Cardiology (1999-2001), and the Quentin Young Leadership Award, Department of Medicine, Cook County Hospital (2001).
