Friday, August 2, 2013

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry extends it sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Donald Robert Smith, MD’51; Professor Emeritus. Dr. Smith passed away at the age of 85 on July 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen, and children Jane (Paul Voorheis) and sons Douglas and Bruce, as well as his grandchildren.

An accomplished internist, Dr. Smith attended Western University receiving his medical degree in 1951. He completed post graduate training in Internal Medicine in 1956 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1956.

Dr. Smith joined the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (then known as the Faculty of Medicine) in 1957. He became a full professor in 1973 and was named a professor emeritus in 2001.  Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Smith served on numerous committees to further patient care, was an examiner in Internal Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology, and served as the president of the Medical Staff Association at University Hospital.

Dr. Smith will always be remembered “as a man of great compassion and insight.”  Beyond this, to all of those who had the privilege of practicing with him, or receiving a consult from him, Dr. Smith was always the “internist’s internist”.  He was a tremendous teacher, a mentor to many, and a cherished colleague.  He was an avid fly fisher and gardener – attributes that only further enhanced his standing as an incredibly well rounded physician.  He will be truly missed by all of us.
