Monday, July 23, 2012

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Shamim Tejpar's appointment as Assistant Dean, Rural and Regional Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University has been extended for two additional years from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2014.

In 1978, Dr. Tejpar graduated from Pahlavi University in Shiraz Iran, and then moved to Canada to complete her Paediatric Residency at the Janeway Hospital, Memorial University in Newfoundland. Moving to Stratford in 1988 she became the first Chief of Paediatrics from 1990 to 2009, for the Stratford General Hospital. There, she worked endlessly to build the Department and the Special Care Nursery. Through the combined efforts of the Stratford community and the Department of Paediatrics, the department evolved from a Level I facility, to a Level II facility with five obstetricians, five paediatricians, and eight registered midwives. The team delivers more than 1,200 babies annually.

Dr. Tejpar was the coordinator for the Medical Student and Resident rotations in Paediatrics at the Stratford General Hospital since she arrived in Stratford, and has been an active participant in the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) since its inception. She was the Academic Director of Paediatrics for SWOMEN since 2004 and has brought her love of teaching and knowledge of clinical training to her role sitting on the Residency Training Program Committee for the Department of Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Dr. Tejpar will continue to work with the Chair, Chair/Chiefs, Program Directors and Preceptors to ensure that there is a shared dialogue between the University and the surrounding Communities ensuring students are aware that the distributed medical education program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a gem for Southwestern Ontario. She will also continue to work with other Ontario universities to ensure that medical students have the best possible student experience.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Tejpar.
