Funeral arrangements have now been announced for Dr. Dana Winterburn, an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, who was tragically killed in a car accident on Tuesday, April 10th. A celebratory memorial will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, in London.
In lieu of flowers, her family has asked that donations be made to the Dr. Dana S. Winterburn Memorial Scholarship Fund at Western or the Breast Cancer Society.
Dr. Winterburn was a beloved doctor at the Byron Family Medical Centre. She graduated with her MD from the University of Alberta in 1994, and received her Certification in Family Medicine in 1996, after completing her residency at The University of Western Ontario. She was granted fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2007.
Dr. Winterburn had been with the Department of Family Medicine at Western since 2004. Prior to joining the Department, she served as a family physician at the Middlesex London Health Unit, at the North Lambton Community Health Centre serving the Kettle Point First Nation, at the London Psychiatric Hospital, and at Student Health Services at Western.
Dr. Stephen Wetmore, Chair/Chief of Family Medicine writes, "in addition to family medicine education, Dana’s special interests included aboriginal health, education of aboriginal students, care of the elderly, and palliative care. She was proud of her aboriginal roots and contributed significantly as a member of the Native Physicians Association of Canada, the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada, and the Canadian Aboriginal Leaders in Medicine.
"Dana was loved by her patients and students alike. She was honoured with several teaching awards, including the University Students’ Council Honour Roll, and the Ian McWhinney Award for excellence in residency teaching, which she received twice, in 2007 and 2009. In addition, she received the Martin J. Bass award for exceptional contributions to family medicine in service, teaching, research and administration in 2006. Dana Winterburn was an accomplished family physician and educator, taken from us altogether too soon. Her friendly nature, strong commitment, and wise counsel will definitely be missed by the Department of Family Medicine."
