Seymour Schulich has been promoted from a Member to an Officer of the Order of Canada for his transformational philanthropy in support of education and health care institutions. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, made the announcment on December 30, 2011. Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Western's Medical and Dental School was named after Schulich in recognition of a $26 million dollar donation in 2004. He has also donated funds to York (Schulich School of Business), Calgary (Schulich School of Engineering), Dalhousie (Schulich School of Law), McGill (Schulich School of Music), and Nipissing (Schulich School of Education). His philanthropy also extends beyond universities, to the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Schulich Heart Centre) in Toronto, and outside Canada to the University of Nevada and Technion (Israel Institute of Technology).
The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 40 years, more than 5,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.
