Director sought for Centre for Environment and Sustainability

Environment and sustainability constitute an interdisciplinary area at The University of Western Ontario, with principal participation from the Faculties of Science, Engineering, and Social Science. An ongoing major initiative is the establishment of a centre for research and teaching in environment and sustainability. The University of Western Ontario now invites applications or nominations for a senior-level faculty appointment as the first Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES). The selected candidate will be appointed with tenure either as Professor or Associate Professor in an appropriate academic Department.

The initial term of the Directorship will be for a period of 5 years. The starting date will be July 1, 2010 or thereafter. The Faculty of Science (home page http://www.uwo.ca/sci/) is host Faculty for the Centre, and the Faculty of Engineering (http://www.eng.uwo.ca/) and the Faculty of Social Science http://www.ssc.uwo.ca/) are designated Participating Faculties. It is anticipated the appointment will be made in one of the departments in the Faculties of Science, Engineering, or Social Science. The Director will be expected to lead a vigorous and internationally competitive research program, to supervise graduate and undergraduate student research, and to participate in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In addition, a significant portion of effort will be directed to leading, developing, and administering the Centre for Environment and Sustainability. The Director will be expected to coordinate and accelerate the development of comprehensive environment and sustainability programs in research, undergraduate education, and graduate studies at Western, to raise the profile of the Centre within Canada, and to advance the University's growth in internationalization by fostering collaborative international research and international student experiences in the area of environment and sustainability. The successful candidate must have an excellent research record in a relevant area and demonstrate the high level of vision, leadership and resourcefulness appropriate to the position of Director.
