Dean Carol Herbert is pleased to announce Dr. Shamim Tejpar, as the Assistant Dean, Rural and Regional Medicine for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry to commence July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012.

In 1978, Dr. Tejpar graduated from Pahlavi University in Shiraz Iran, and then moved to Canada to complete her Paediatric Residency at the Janeway Hospital at Memorial University in Newfoundland. Moving to Stratford in 1988 to become the first Chief of Paediatrics as of 1990, for the Stratford General Hospital, Dr. Tejpar has worked endlessly to build the Department and the Special Care Nursery. With the support of the Stratford community, Shamim has grown the Department of Paediatrics from a Level I facility, to a Level II Unit with 5 Obstetricians, 4 Paediatricians, and 8 Registered Midwives. The team delivers over 1200 babies a year.

Dr. Tejpar has been the coordinator for the Medical Student and Resident rotations in Paediatrics at the General Hospital since she arrived in Stratford, and has been an active participant in the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN) since its inception. Shamim has been the Academic Director for the Department of Paediatrics since 2004 and has brought her love of teaching and knowledge of clinical training to her role sitting on the Residency Training Program Committee for the Department of Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

In her first term as Assistant Dean, Dr. Tejpar will continue to work with the Chair, Chair/Chiefs, Program Directors and Preceptors to ensure that there is a shared dialogue between the University and our surrounding Communities and that students are aware that the distributed medical education program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a gem for Southwestern Ontario, and will continue to work with other Ontario Universities to ensure that medical students have the best possible student experience.
