A delegation from Brazil will be visiting the SchulichSchool of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario on Monday July 7th to sign an exchange agreement to benefit dental students and oral health research.
Members of the Brazilian delegation include:
1) Dr. Maria Fidela de Lima Navarro, Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo. She is the Secretary General of University of São Paulo and Vice-President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).
Dr. de Lima Navarro will be giving a seminar July 7th at 2:30 p.m. in Medical Sciences Room 212 A/B entitled “Potential areas for collaborative research between Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and BauruSchool of Dentistry.” Everyone is welcome to attend.
2) Dr. Luis Fernando Pegoraro, Dean, BauruSchool of Dentistry, University of São Paulo.
3) Dr. Marco Antonio Bottino, Professor of Dentistry, São PauloStateUniversity, São José dos Campos.
Dr. Gildo Santos, a faculty member in restorative dentistry at Western, started the discussions that led to this international collaboration. He attended dental school at the University of São Paulo in Brazil and came to Canada to the University of Toronto on an exchange, which he found very beneficial. In many cases, the Brazilian government will cover the cost of graduate students doing research abroad.
Two agreements will be signed by Western and the University of São Paulo, one for student exchanges and one for research collaboration. Western believes the quality of research and teaching is strengthened by the establishment of international cooperative links.
The University of São Paulo is the largest higher education and research institution in Brazil. Student enrollment is 77,000, of which 22,000 are enrolled in graduate programs leading to a Masters or PhD degree.
“We are very pleased to be entering into this partnership which will benefit both universities, not only on the scientific and academic level, but also culturally,” says Dr. Harinder Sandhu, Director of Schulich Dentistry. The School also has an exchange agreement with the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia.
