In memoriam: Dr. Richard Boyd

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

It is with sadness that we report Dr. Richard Boyd, a well-respected urologist in Windsor and one of our SWOMEN Preceptors, died on Saturday, March 29, at the age of 63 from a stroke following a heart attack.

Dr. Boyd performed two surgeries last Tuesday at Windsor Regional Hospital before going to its emergency department. He was transferred to Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital, but his condition deteriorated.

Dr. Boyd grew up in Windsor, the son of a doctor, and graduated from our medical school in 1968. He joined the former Windsor Western Hospital Centre in 1973 and went on to become the chief of surgery at the former Metropolitan General Hospital. Most recently he was the head of urology at Windsor General Hospital.

An avid runner, Dr. Boyd was training for Sunday's Around the Bay 30k Road Race in Hamilton. He also loved to golf and was the president of the Essex Golf and Country Club.

He is survived by his wife Jane and sons Andrew and David. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Church at City Hall Square. Visitation is today from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 pm at Walter D. Kelly Funeral Home, 1969 Wyandotte St. E.
