The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario has a long tradition of excellence, beginning with founding of the medical school in 1881 and continuing with the formation of the dental school in 1964.

Our reputation has been built by dedicated teachers, breakthrough discoveries, our commitment to social responsibility and our affinity for strategic partnerships.

Facts about the School (2009-2010)

 Schulich Medicine & Dentistry currently employs more than 1,800 full- and part-time faculty members in clinical and basic medical sciences, dentistry, and Robarts Research Institute. We have an additional staff complement of 1,530.

 Current enrolment for the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry includes:

  • 591 medical students
  • 224 dentistry students
  • 652 students in Year 3 and Year 4 of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences program
  • 742 postgraduate Medical trainees (residents and fellows)
  • 4 postgraduate dental residents
  • 568 graduate students working towards Masters or PhD degrees
  • 12 training in specialized postgraduate dentistry programs
  • 27 in a program for Internationally Trained Dentists

 

 More than $6 million in financial assistance is provided annually by the School and University so that qualified students may apply to professional and graduate programs, regardless of financial circumstances

 With approximately $135 million in research funding annually, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry is home to the internationally renowned Robarts Research Institute, 22 Canada Research Chairs, and hundreds of other world-class research teams and investigators.

 Medical students and residents receive clinical training in more
than 40 rural and regional communities through Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network (SWOMEN)

 In September 2008, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry – Windsor Program opened in partnership with the University of Windsor and Windsor hospitals. As of 2010-11, the program will train 92 students in first, second and third year.

 Schulich Dental Clinics see approximately 15,000 patient visits per year. Since 2001, the clinics have served more than 40,000 individual community members.
Schulich Dentistry also operates a Dental Outreach Community Services program which (DOCS) brings portable dental units to community centres in London once per month to offer free dental care to low-income families without dental insurance.

 Schulich Medicine & Dentistry partners with hospitals, health systems and research labs regionally, nationally and internationally. In London, its closest partners are London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care, London and the Lawson Health Research Institute. In Windsor, its hospital partners are Hotel Dieu-Grace Hospital and Windsor Regional Hospital.

 Western’s Faculty of Medicine was established in 1881; the Faculty of Dentistry was created in 1964. The two merged to form one Faculty in 1997.

 The School was named the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in 2005 in recognition of a $26-million donation from Seymour Schulich; the gift largely supports annual scholarships for Medicine, Dentistry and Graduate students in medical science
