Grand Challenge 2012 - Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development (Round II)
United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, and UK’s UK Department of International Development (DFID) have joined together to launch the second wave of Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development.
Together, we call for groundbreaking prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the time of childbirth. The estimated 2.6 million stillbirths, 3.1 million neonatal deaths and 360,000 maternal deaths that occur globally each year signal a major gap for intervention specifically around childbirth and the early postnatal period – a time when mothers and babies are most vulnerable and global progress in reducing mortality has been particularly poor. This gap in interventions is particularly acute in poor, underserved communities that are the most difficult to reach and among women who are disadvantaged.
Innovative ideas that can leapfrog conventional approaches are critical in this area. If we are to accelerate substantial and sustainable progress in reducing maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths at the community level, we need innovative prevention and treatment approaches across three main domains:
(1) Science & technology;
(2) Service delivery; and
(3) Demand-side innovation that empowers pregnant women and their families to practice healthy behaviors and be aware of and access health care during pregnancy, childbirth and the early postnatal period, especially the first two days after birth.
We are particularly interested in investing in approaches that incorporate the latest scientific, technological, behavior change, and information and communication advances into radical solutions.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - Request for LOIs: Development of a Rapid Immunity Assessment Tool
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is focused on ensuring that all children have equal access to the immunizations they need to protect them against vaccine-preventable diseases. The Gates Foundation endorses and strives for the goals outlined by the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy (GIVS), of at least 90% vaccination coverage in every country, and at least 80% coverage in every district.
Regular measurement of vaccination coverage across the developing world is important to assess progress against coverage goals, and to identify areas of weakness in delivery systems so that corrective action can be taken. Current tools and processes to measure vaccination coverage have significant limitations, which can lead to reliance on imprecise estimates of coverage.
This Request for Letters of Inquiry (RFLOI) will solicit proposals from organizations to develop a prototype and detailed commercialization plan for an immunity assessment tool that can more accurately measure vaccination coverage in the developing world.
Deadline: Mar 27, 2012

Human Frontier Science Program - Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants
The HFSP supports innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. In the past decade biological research has become increasingly quantitative rather than descriptive. The participation of scientists from disciplines outside the traditional life sciences such as biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nanoscience and physics has contributed to this change and will continue to do so. Such collaborations have opened up new approaches for understanding the complex structures and regulatory networks that characterize living organisms, their evolution and interactions.
There are two types of grant: Young Investigators' Grants are for teams of scientists who are all within 5 years of establishing an independent laboratory and within 10 years of obtaining their Ph.D.s. Program Grants are for independent scientists at all stages of their careers, although the participation of younger scientists is especially encouraged.
Research grants are available for projects concerned with basic approaches to understanding the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Topics covered range from molecular and cellular approaches to biological functions to systems neuroscience including cognitive functions. Smith-Lemli-Opitz/RSH Foundation
Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder causing a defect in cholesterol synthesis which results in delays in all areas of development and may be complicated with one or more congenital malformations. SLOS is a life-long disorder with no cure and limited treatment options, and is often misunderstood. Many individuals with the syndrome go completely undiagnosed. It is a goal of the Smith-Lemli-Opitz/RSH Foundation to fund research that addresses these issues. Therefore the foundation seeks and accepts proposals for research into furthering any knowledge related to SLOS.
The foundation's main interest is in providing funding to experienced investigators for testing of initial hypotheses and preliminary data collection leading to long-term funding by major granting institutions (often considered "seed money"), and continuation of ongoing research while other funding is in the final stages of acceptance. However, as a secondary goal in the research arena, the Foundation wishes to continually attract new investigators into the realm of SLOS and welcomes any proposals they may put forth.
Amount: $25,000

The ADDF is responding to this problem by creating the Alzheimer's Program to Accelerate Clinical Trials (PACT). The goal of this Request for Proposals (RFP) is to increase the number of innovative drugs tested in humans for Alzheimer's disease. This program will fund biomarker-based pilot clinical trials for Alzheimer's disease.

The Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative is focused on engaging creative minds to work on scientific and technological breakthroughs for the world’s most pressing health problems. Grand Challenges Explorations is a grant program within the initiative that fosters innovative, early-stage research to expand the pipeline of ideas that can lead to those much needed global health and development solutions. A total of $44 million in funding is available to expand the pipeline of ideas to help women and children live more prosperous and healthy lives in the developing world.
Preventing Preterm Birth: In coordination with the Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth, this initiative seeks to generate new discoveries for more rapid development of equitable, relevant, and innovative interventions to prevent preterm birth and stillbirth. By filling the void of scientific knowledge on the causes and mechanisms important to preterm birth in the developing world, the initiative hopes to identify low-cost novel technologies that reduce the global burden of prematurity; attract scientists to engage in this underserved global health field; and increase investments from other global health research and development funders. The initiative expects to fund a diverse group of investigators with skills and innovative approaches who ultimately will work together to interrogate hypotheses using state-of-the-art model systems. The competition expects to award a total of up to $20 million in six to ten grants of up to $2 million each for a three- to four-year period. (Deadline: January 31, 2012.)
Discover New Ways to Achieve Healthy Growth: The goal of this opportunity is to elucidate new pathways or mechanisms that directly inform the development of interventions for the prevention of impaired growth (i.e., stunting and wasting, during the first thousand days following conception). Ultimately, the program seeks to identify simpler, less costly, and more effective interventions delivered before conception, during pregnancy, or in the first two years of life. Approaches should address the underlying biological mechanisms that lead to adverse developmental outcomes, focusing specifically on either or both infection and nutrition, the two primary factors involved in altering the course of fetal and infant growth and development in the developing world. The competition will award up to a total of $15 million in grants of up to $2 million each for a period of thirty-six to forty-eight months. (Deadline: January 25, 2012.)
Biomarkers of Gastrointestinal (Gut) Function and Health: The goal of this opportunity is to identify and validate biomarkers of gut function to improve the health and development of children in the developing world. The competition is intended to identify a promising biomarker or a biomarker signature that accurately reflects physical and physiological properties of the structural and/or functional integrity of the gut, especially the ileum or small intestine. The program seeks new ideas and potential collaborations from academic, industrial, and other expert investigators for the discovery and validation of biomarkers or biomarker signatures that are indicative of a healthy, functional, or injured GI tract in order to facilitate the future development of robust diagnostic tests for use in pediatric populations in low-resource settings. Up to a total of $9 million is available in awards of up to $1.5 million for project periods of no longer than twenty-four months. (Deadline: January 11, 2012.)

James S. McDonnell Foundation Research Awards for Brain Cancer Research
All proposals submitted to the foundation must clearly link the experimental models and questions to the realities of human disease. Proposals primarily intending to characterize basic mechanisms of growth and development that may plausibly but are not yet known to be contributory to human brain cancer are not encouraged. Proposals testing molecules as possible treatment interventions should consider including tests designed to uncover unintended biological effects of such molecules that would disqualify future clinical usefulness. Research with in vitro or in vivo model systems must demonstrate that the model has predictive value for human tumors.
The Foundation is particularly interested in supporting novel research that will generate new knowledge leading to increased rates of survival and improve functional recovery for individuals with brain cancer.

James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Awards in Complex Systems Science
The Complex Systems program supports scholarship and research directed toward the development of theoretical and mathematical tools that can be applied to the study of complex, adaptive, nonlinear systems. It is anticipated that research funded in this program will address issues in fields such as biology, biodiversity, climate, demography, epidemiology, technological change, economic development, governance, or computation. JSMF supports research in the brain sciences through its topical program Understanding Human Cognition. The Foundation recommends that researchers in the neurosciences not submit proposals to the Complex Systems RFA. Typically, such proposals are unsuccessful. While the program's emphasis is on the development and application of the theory and tools used in the study of complex research questions and not on particular fields of research per se, JSMF is particularly interested in projects attempting to apply complex systems approaches to coherently articulated questions. Proposals intending to apply complex system tools and models to problems where such approaches are not yet considered usual or mainstream are appropriate to the RFA.

U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command - Medical Practice Initiative Breadth of Medical Practice and Disease Frequency Exposure
The intent and desired outcome of the research activities described in this program announcement are to conduct research concerning outpatient primary care physician skill degradation through testing and surveys of physicians compared with frequency of exposure to various diagnoses and presentations. The testing will be an assessment of physicians' knowledge, competence, fluency, and comfort with said conditions. The method to determine frequency of exposure must be based upon data extracted by Electronic Health Records that the investigators' study group has generated. The primary, but not exclusive, purpose of this program announcement is to solicit pre-proposals and then by invitation only, request full proposal submissions for research that will achieve the following:
1. Identify when and why degradation of cognitive clinical skills occurs. Cognitive skills may also include physician comfort and fluency with potential conditions and treatments such as generating interview questions, understanding the differential diagnosis for the complaint and selection of optimal therapies.
2. Create validated analytical tools that can predict the probable onset of cognitive skills degradation and determine, with specificity, when skill or knowledge areas have degraded or will be likely to degrade.
3. Propose methods and tools which will enable physicians to preemptively refresh knowledge and maintain familiarity and fluency across the expected competencies for their specialty. Determine optimal and minimal refreshment intervals to accomplish this goal. Identify impact of varying types of refreshment activities.
