Clinical Research Training Programs

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry features several Clinical-Scientist Research Training Programs to provide a research-rich training environment and financial support at various stages, from Undergraduate Medicine to Senior Residency.

A variety of opportunities ranging from summer projects to full graduate degrees are available. These projects will enhance the physicians abilities to incorporate and integrate scientific research with patient care.

Schulich Research Opportunities Program (SROP):

Purpose: The aim of the Schulich Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is to enrich undergraduate medical and dental education by enabling students to conduct research under the supervision of a Schulich faculty member.

The program is intended to foster an appreciation for and proficiency with the research process. It will complement other existing programs to foster student research, including Schulich's Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) and student research opportunities in Dentistry. It is hoped that this program will provide an opportunity for students to learn how research is conducted and will encourage medical and dentistry students to incorporate research activities into their future career plans.

The goal of the Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) is to encourage medical students to pursue their interests in medical research. SRTP enables first and second year medical students in the SchulichSchool of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario to work under the supervision of a faculty member on a research project during the summer months, for two years.

Program Objectives:

  • To allow medical students to gain exposure to basic and clinical research.
  • To encourage students to develop a scholarly approach to the practice of medicine.
  • To assist in choosing a career path after graduation.

The MD/PhD program is jointly sponsored by the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Western Ontario. It provides a wonderful opportunity to begin a career combining research and clinical practice.

The program at Western enables participating students to combine undergraduate medicine and forefront research with one or more of the leading scientists in the Faculty or one of the research institutes.

We hope our website gets you started in learning about our expanding MD/PhD program at Western.

Resident Research Career Development Program (RRCD)

http://www.schulich.uwo.ca/awards/index.php?page=RRCD

RRCD is intended to foster the development of promising young residents and/or fellows within Schulich Medicine & Dentistry into successful clinician-scientists. This program will facilitate the identification, development and recruitment of these individuals by supplying financial support for further training, mentorship for career development and advocacy for faculty appointment.

A maximum of two residents (or fellows) from each department can be nominated to apply for 1 of 2 RRCD awards available each year.

These individuals must be targeted to join the faculty on an academic appointment as clinician-scientists after appropriate training is completed.

Clinical Investigator Program (CIP)

The CIP at the University of Western Ontario is a Royal College program for senior residents or fellows that provides a research-rich training environment. The Program is intended for residents in their senior years who have not yet completed their residency and provides the opportunity to complete a graduate degree accompanied with specialized research training.

The Program intent is that residents will complete their core years and then enter the CIP.

Residents in the CIP must be in a graduate program offered through one of the basic science departments at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. During the program, which is normally 2 years, residents will pursue research through their graduate program and as well, will participate in a research seminar series focused on the development of clinical investigators.
