Year 3 - Clerkship

Clerkship

Clerkship course, a single course of six (6) core rotations across the Year 3 curriculum is well suited to a CBME model of assessment. Rotation structure, exploring longitudinal integrated clinical learning, restructuring with new optional pathways for patient care education and a new model for learning and career support were key concepts recently revised in the course. Clinical clerks are expected to function as a member of the multidisciplinary team participating in the care of inpatients and outpatients.

Psychiatry Clerkship is offered through 8 blocks and the rotation has been reduced to 4 weeks at present due to the pandemic. Each rotation, divided into 2 blocks of 2 weeks each, is designed to provide exposure to common psychiatric conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings inclusive of acute and chronic care. Clerks are offered the opportunity to use 3 full days during the rotation to enrich their experience in psychiatry by working in subspecialty populations of their choice (if available). Orientation on the first day includes a review of safety material (eg. use of panic alarms), review of history taking and mental status exam, and introduction to the members of their team and their roles. Information is provided on the CBME assessment process, evaluations, and end of block exam. They will also have a tour of the key areas in the hospital as it pertains to their rotation and on call process. Clerks will meet with the Clerkship Director for mid-rotation and final exit interviews during the rotation. Clerks are expected to participate in emergency room call and on call evaluations are to be completed by residents. Mandatory educational sessions are scheduled daily from 8:00am-9:00am. This includes seminars by faculty and senior residents on clinically relevant topics informed by MCC objectives. In addition, supplementary resources will also be available through Elantra.
