Michael Rieder, has been appointed as Chair/Chief of the Department of Paediatrics, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University and its teaching hospitals, London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care London for a five year
Rieder earned a medical degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1980, and completed his residency training in paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In 1988, he joined the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario and became an Assistant Professortothe
Department of Paediatrics, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. He earned a PhD in Biomedical Pharmacology from the University of Toronto in 1992. In 2014, Dr.
Rieder received the title of Distinguished University Professor at Western University.Dr.
Rieder’s research aims to understand sources of variability in human drug response so that safe and effective therapy can be provided – the right drug at the right dose at the right time for the right patient. His laboratory, the Drug Safety Laboratory, is the core validation laboratory for a national network of drug safety researchers, the Canadian Pharmacogenomic
Network for Drug Safety.Dr.
Rieder currently holds the title of CIHR-GSK Chair in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology. He was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award in 1999 and 2000, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry; the Senior Investigator Award, Canadian Society for Clinical Pharmacology in 2008; Faculty Scholar at Western University in 2009; two Canadian Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics Publication Awards in 2010 and 2011’ the Academic Leadership Award for Clinical Investigation from the Paediatric Chairs of Canada in 2016 and the Sumner Yaffe Lifetime Achievement Award in Pediatric Pharmacotherapy from the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group in 2017.
