It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Paediatrics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Children’s Hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre. As a clinical academic department, at one of Canada’s oldest and largest medical schools, we train undergraduate medical students, paediatric residents and sub-specialty fellows. We participate in the training of a number of other physicians, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals. We are responsible for providing child health care for a population of over 2 million people stretching from Windsor to Thunder Bay. We also conduct research and enquiry on important paediatrics health care issues in collaboration with our colleagues at Western, at the Child Health Research Institute (CHRI) and at universities and hospitals across Canada and beyond.
As one of the largest providers of child health care in Ontario, our Department has a full range of paediatric specialty and sub-specialty services and works closely with our colleagues in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Psychiatry, Paediatric Anaesthesia and Paediatric Radiology. Together we provide integrated multi-disciplinary care. A unique aspect of the care we provide is our distributed model for providing child health care across our region. We also work with our provincial partners across Ontario to ensure that a full range of care, from primary to quaternary care, is available for the children in our region. This integrated network not only enables the provision of state-of-the-art care close to home, but also facilitates the training of medical students and residents, as well as facilitating translational research.
Our educational programs include our paediatric residency as well as accredited fellowship programs in Neonatology, Paediatric Critical Care, Paediatric Emergency Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. Members of the Department occupy a number of key positions in the educational leadership at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.
The Department is involved in a number of productive and cutting edge research programs including studies of traumatic brain injury, determinants of health-related quality of life, best treatment in acute care settings and optimal drug therapy for a wide range of health problems in children. A new and exciting area of research is Personalized or Precision Therapy for Children, an initiative led by several of our sub-specialty care areas in collaboration with CHRI and Schulich’s Division of Clinical Pharmacology, the largest such division in Canada.
Our vision is to Foster the Health of Children and Youth for Today and Tomorrow. There are a number of exciting new developments underway, including the development of an integrated Children’s Hospital within a hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre that will help us to achieve our vision for children in our region and beyond.
