Chair's Message

Photograph of Dr. Tracey CrumleyWelcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

As interim Chair-Chief of our Department, I am excited to bridge the gap between the departure of our previous tenured Chair-Chief, Dr. Maggie Rebel, and the search for our new Department leader.

We are proud to be the tertiary care centre for Southwestern Ontario, with one of the largest birthing centres in the country. Our team of Obstetricians and Gynecologists are providing excellent and complete care to women in all stages of health. We have recently completed the accreditation process from Accreditation Canada, and along with the LHSC organization as a whole, the Women’s Care Program received exemplary status.

We are increasing our clinical work to integrate with community partners and reducing focus on inpatient care through improvements to ambulatory and community care. We have done this in new and innovative programs like the Antenatal Day Program, the Urogynecology clinic and the expansion of The Fertility Clinic to a secondary site, OMEGA Fertility, where our physicians can provide specialized care to an increasing need for fertility and family planning services.

Beginning July 2019, OB/Gyn departments across the country, including here at Western University, will be transitioning to Competency By Design (CBD) to improve and expand our reach in promoting excellence in teaching during residency training. We have also expanded our Simulation Education programs within our specialty and inter-disciplinary to improve education and quality of care. Our educational mission is thriving under optimistic leadership and faculty support for these new initiatives and the introduction of new tools and resources.

We are continuing our collaboration with affiliated research institutes at Children’s Health Research Institute and Lawson Health Research Institute, with a wide range of ongoing research with particular focus on fetal development, fetal origins of adult disease, reproductive health and ovarian cancer.
