Diversity and Equity Initiatives in the Doctor of Medicine Program

The School’s Statement on Diversity was developed by a working group following the findings of the 2015 LCME/CACMS Accreditation full survey report.

This statement was created in alignment with Western’s Strategic Plan, the principles of diversity and equity defined in the policies of Western University and Schulich’s Strategic Plan to reaffirm the School’s commitment to diversity and equity as key factors for fulfilling our social responsibility.

Through the strategic planning process the School has identified Our Mission as:

“The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry provides outstanding education within a research-intensive, distributed learning environment where tomorrow’s physicians, dentists, researchers, scholars and staff learn to be socially responsible leaders in the advancement of human health locally, regionally and globally.”

As such, Schulich extends diversity to include all facets and any differences which define how individuals perceive themselves. Based on this definition, the School has chosen its diversity statement as:

“At the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry we commit to providing a welcoming and accommodating environment for all. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry Diversity Statement was developed with consideration of the entire school community, including medical students, staff, faculty, and academic leadership. At the core of the School’s mandate is to maintain and improve an environment in all programs, research and patient care of mutual respect and understanding, free of discrimination. The School is developing a comprehensive implementation plan to enhance and better support existing, and develop new initiatives and programs to ensure that our diversity outcomes for medical students are achieved and measured. A visioning document “Advancing Diversity in Schulich Medicine” was developed as a preliminary plan to address the Diversity element.
