Schulich Medicine & Dentistry provides a unique learning experience including access to state-of-the-art research facilities and mentorship by internationally recognized leaders in clinical and basic medical science research. We have 17 graduate programs, from thesis-based to interdisciplinary, and we offer degrees such as MSc, PhD, and MClD.
The Anatomy & Cell Biology Program offers a modern collaborative training experience catering to the needs of the individual student pursuing an MSc or PhD degree. Our dedicated, award-winning mentors and state-of-the-art facilities provide a rich training environment in which students can immerse themselves in one or more academic disciplines, including cell biology, neurobiology, anatomical sciences, and/ or education scholarship.
The Biological Research field is a research-intensive, thesis-based program designed to prepare students for a career as a research scientist in academia or industry. Our Clinical Anatomy field offers a unique training experience consisting of course work, research, and hands-on teaching experience; and is intended to prepare the next generation of medical educators and scholars.
The Department of Biochemistry offers MSc and PhD graduate degrees. PhD and thesis based MSc degrees require completion of a research-intensive thesis, course work, and participation in a seminar program.
Research programs are categorized into six major areas: genome dynamics, epigenetics & gene expression; human genetics & clinical biochemistry; macromolecular structure & dynamics; signal transduction & intracellular communication; proteomics; bioinformatics. State-of-the-art facilities are available in the areas of protein structure, genetics and proteomics and cellular signal transduction.
Biomedical Engineering is a program that promotes the cooperative involvement of clinical and basic researchers in allied disciplines such as biomaterials, biomechanics and imaging. This program encourages multidisciplinary links between the faculties of Engineering, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Health Sciences, Robarts Research Institute and London Health Research Institute, and Western’s teaching hospitals.
A collaborative program with Faculty of Science, our primary objective is to train professional developmental biologists who will make significant contributions to the field. Students are enrolled in one of the affiliated graduate programs in Science or Schulich Medicine & Dentistry and take joint courses/seminars in developmental biology.
We offer MSc and PhD degrees in Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Degrees with a specialization in Biostatistics are offered through a collaborative program with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences. Students in all programs are exposed to a full breadth of policy-relevant methodologies from the fields of epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, health economics, clinical trials, and program evaluation
The Family Medicine Program has attracted family physicians from Canada and around the world who wish to enhance their knowledge, skills and leadership within the discipline of Family Medicine. This program combines two weeks on-site once yearly with distance education online. The course of study is designed to fit the needs of the individual applicant and utilizes the broad range of academic and research expertise of the faculty.
The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program is designed to fill a novel niche at the intersection of leadership, sustainability and policy within the Canadian Health Care System and globally. The MPH Program is a 12-month full-time program employing the case method of learning. The MPH Program is an applicant for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health.
Students in the MPH Program learn as a cohort and benefit from a low student to faculty ratio. Students are exposed to diverse experiences and backgrounds as they share and learn with their small learning teams. Through case studies, professors, and fellow peers, students learn about public health in a way that will prepare them as future leaders at national and international levels. The 10- to 12-week practicum provides hands-on work experience and our Career Development Coordinator assists both current students and alumni with job searches.
The MD/PhD Program aims to select a few exceptional students with a passion for research to combine this with undergraduate medical training, preparing them to become future leaders in medical research and patient care. The MD/PhD Program fosters training with a leading scientist and the integration of laboratory work and medical school, and as well compresses the time to obtain both degrees to just seven years. Students accepted into the MD/PhD Program carry out their doctoral research in one of the graduate programs in Schulich Medicine & Dentistry.
This graduate program is internationally known for multidisciplinary research in the fields of medical imaging; medical physics and radiobiology in cancer treatment and research; microcirculation and cellular biophysics; orthopedic biomechanics and biomaterials; and hemodynamics and cardiovascular biomechanics. The graduate program in Microbiology and Immunology offers research-intensive, thesis-based graduate training at the Masters and Doctoral levels. We possess world class facilities and a motivating training environment, with high profile research programs overseen by internationally distinguished faculty members.
The Graduate Program of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology revolves around two major fields of scientific endeavor: i) The molecular and cellular biology of microorganisms, and ii) The molecular and cellular biology of the immune system. Molecular imaging is a new and rapidly emerging biomedical research discipline that involves the non-invasive detection of changes in the expression of genes, molecules and cells in vivo over time. It may be defined as the visual representation, characterization and quantification of biological processes at the cellular and molecular levels within intact living organisms.
Students enrolled in the graduate programs of the Departments of Medical Biophysics, Anatomy & Cell Biology, Pathology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry (Faculty of Science) are eligible to apply. As part of the Molecular Imaging program, students will take courses in medical and molecular imaging and attend monthly journal club meetings.
Schulich Medicine & Dentistry offers students the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in the interdisciplinary field of Neuroscience. The Program is designed for students with a variety of interests and backgrounds. These can include such areas as computer science, mathematics, engineering, chemistry and physics as well as the more traditional areas of anatomy, pharmacology, psychology, physiology, zoology, neurology, ophthalmology and physical therapy.
The Neuroscience graduate program provides a strong foundation in Neuroscience and help students to develop skills and competencies necessary for a career in variety of fields, including academia and industry.
The program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed to provide candidates with a comprehensive background for the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a specialty, as well as to prepare them for examinations by the Royal College of Dentists in Canada.
The program includes extensive training in surgical correction of dentofacial deformities, maxillofacial trauma, maxillofacial pathology, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, implant surgery and ambulatory anesthesia. The program is six years in duration and is a combined MD/MSc degree program.
The purpose of the program in Orthodontics is to provide the academic background and clinical experience appropriate to the specialty of Orthodontics. The program is fully accredited by the Council on Education of the Canadian Dental Association, and meets the specialty certification requirement of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and the eligibility requirement of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
Graduate Studies in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine are offered to those interested in acquiring a more extensive knowledge of the mechanisms of cell and tissue injury and of the etiology, pathogenesis and behaviour of disease. Normally the research supervised will be within the principal interests and funded research areas of staff members of the Department.
The Pathologists’ Assistant program in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers students the opportunity to train in the highly specialized field of anatomical pathology. This two-year, full-time program begins in September of each year. The first year is comprised of various courses.
The second year of the program is composed of rotations through the hospital experience in autopsy and surgical pathology, research project and completing a two month community elective.
The goals of this graduate program are to train students in Physiology and Pharmacology. Graduates of the Master's program will be capable of active participation in a research program, and of teaching the disciplines as well as applying physiological, pharmacological and/or toxicological principles in industrial and professional contexts.
Graduation from the Doctoral program is an essential step towards a career as an independent researcher in academia, and to obtain higher level professional positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, as well as government agencies and research-funding organizations.
The Department of Surgery has a large, well-established, and highly-regarded post-graduate surgical education training program that includes seven individual subspecialty programs. The MSc in Surgery has been designed to afford trainees an intensive research experience which will lead graduates to successful careers as clinician researchers at Academic Health Sciences Centers.
All students will conduct novel research resulting in the completing of an MSc thesis which must be successfully defended by the student to accomplish the degree requirements.
