Western Heads East Presentation - Probiotic Yoghurt Project throughout Eastern Africa - Friday Jan 20th 12:30-1:30pm, London Hall, Room 100
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Hello Western Faculty and Staff,
Come join us and catch up on what Western students have been doing with the women's groups in East Africa and learn more about the project, our interns' experiences, sample the yoghurt, and hear about how you can get more involved with the project.
The Western Heads East Project is Western Community's response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa. The goal of the Western Heads East project is to establish disease-fighting probiotic yoghurt businesses in Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda. At the heart of the project is the empowerment of women (Yoghurt Mamas) to make a sustainable difference in African communities.
Students, staff and faculty have been involved in empowering women's groups in Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda to make a probiotic yoghurt developed by researchers here at Western. Clinical studies have shown this strain of probiotic bacteria builds immune response, helps alleviate suffering from diarrhea (a baby dies every minute in Africa as a result of diarrhea), and reduces the risk of bacterial vaginosis (a condition that predisposes women to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases). It is largely student interns who, with faculty advisors (and usually for course credit) are working with our partners in Africa for 3-4 month placements.
Spotlight on Western Heads East: Western Heads East is proud to present a showcase and poster program about the Probiotic Yoghurt Kitchens that have been established throughout Eastern Africa. Hear stories first hand from the interns who have traveled there most recently. Presentations from faculty and the interns will run from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., with a Question & Answer period to follow. You will also have the opportunity to sample the same probiotic yoghurt produced by the yoghurt mamas and to try some Samosas!
Where: London Hall, Room 100
When: Friday, January 20, 2012 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. There will be a Q&A session from 1:30-2:00 pm.
Don’t forget to also save the date for:
In The Market for Western Heads East: March 22, 2012
The Great Hall is transformed into an East African Market for our gala fundraising event. There is a silent auction, stalls where student interns display poster programs, stalls where artwork is sold, African inspired food and wine pairings, and special guest speakers Maimuna Kanyamal of Kivulini Women's Rights Organization and the High Commissioners from East Africa.
I hope to see you at the next upcoming Western Heads East event!
