Divisional News 2017

It is an exciting time within the Division as we welcome 5 new residents to our GIM residency training program: Drs. Rasha Abdul-Karim (Western), Alice Wang (U of Ottawa), Dayna Butler (Memorial U of NFLD), Andre Maddison (Western), and Marilyn Phung (Queen's).  We are also saying goodbye to our two PGY-5 residents, Drs. Michael Peirce, Katie McIntyre, Dou-Anne Siew and Vidya Sujana Kumar.  Dr. Peirce has accepted a position in Stratford starting in October.  Dr. McIntyre has accepted a position in St. Thomas.  Dr. Siew has moved to Vancouver, BC where she will be practicing as a Community General Internist. Dr. Sujana Kumar completed her training in February, and is now temporary clinic faculty at Western, and beginning a 6-month fellowship in Obstetric Medicine at the University of Toronto starting in July.

Chrissy Kienapple has taken a new position with Drs. Appleton and Huda as their administrative assistant.  She will continue in her role as Program Administrator for the GIM residency training program. We welcome Anne Marie Dyson to our staff as Divisional Education Support administrator.  She will be responsible for the Ambulatory GIM rotations for both the North and South end services.

This summer, we also welcome two new faculty members to the Division.  Dr. Hatem Salim has been appointed Assistant Professor and Clinician Teacher, with major responsibilities for the education of the Internal Medicine residents as Assistant Program Director.  Dr. Jeff Yu is also being appointed as Assistant Professor, Clinician Teacher.  His area of academic focus is Point of Care Ultrasound in GIM, and he will be guiding the development of departmental education programs in this important and emerging area of expertise.

Dr. Dou-Anne Siew has completed her training in GIM as of July 1, 2017 and will begin work in Vancouver, BC as a Community Internist. Pictured: Dou-Anne Siew and Dr. Mark Goldszmidt

Faculty

Dr. Andrew Appleton has successfully completed his Masters in Health Sciences in Health Administration, Institute for health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He has also been awarded the designation Certified Health Executive by the Canadian College of Health Leaders.  He will begin his two year program as a Western ICES Faculty Scholar in the fall.

Dr. Kathy Myers has completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program at Drexel University in Philadelphia over the past year.

Dr. George Dresser was named by the residents as Best CTU teacher for 2016-2017.

Dr. Marko Mrkobrada received the PGY4 award for outstanding faculty contribution to their RCSPC examination preparation.
