What is Email for Life?
Email for Life is an initiative put forth by the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (SSMD) in the summer of 2004. All full-time Medicine & Dentistry Undergraduate Students who graduate in 2005 and beyond will be granted an electronic mail account by Schulich which will be kept indefinitely. These email accounts are created and maintained at the expense of Schulich and are independent of the email accounts that are granted to all Undergraduate Students by UWO.
Students are granted 250 MB of disk space and all mail is scanned for viruses and SPAM.
What about the UWO Email Account?
All undergraduate students are granted a UWO email account by default; however, the School recommends that students forward this account to their Email for Life account (E4L). FORWARD UWO MAIL.
All correspondence between SSMD and their students will be addressed using the E4L account and not the UWO account. Students may choose to forward their E4L mail account to another mail account (such as UWO, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc) but this is not recommended.
What is the format of the Email for Life Addresses?
Normally, Email For Life adresses are created using the following format: first initial +
last name +
year of graduation +
@meds.uwo.ca or @dents.uwo.ca.
What about duplicate addresses?
In the event that we have two students with the same name in the same year (ie. Two John Browns) both email addresses will have a numeric digit added to avoid duplication. To be clear, if there were two John Browns in the MEDS Class of 2008 they would have addresses of jbrown12008@meds.uwo.ca and jbrown22008@meds.uwo.ca and neither would be granted the default address of jbrown2008@meds.uwo.ca.
Are there a class Mailing Lists?
There are mailing lists created for each class, which have the following format: MEDS???? (where ???? represents the year of graduation), and DENTS???? (where ???? represents the year of graduation)
PLEASE NOTE: To send a message to a mailing list such as meds2008, you can o address your message to MEDS2008 OR to MEDS2008@meds.uwo.ca.
Can I use my email program to access Email For Life?
Yes. However, The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry only officially supports the web interface and will not offer any assistance/support associated with using third party clients such as Outlook Express to access Email for Life. However, you can configure your email program to use POP3 or IMAP by using emailforlife.fmd.uwo.ca as the Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server. You can also configure your email client (if supported) to use emailforlife.fmd.uwo.ca as your Internet Directory LDAP server for Address Book functionality. Students are urged to use the web interface.
NEW: If you're having trouble sending Email For Life messages using Outlook Express or another email program, please check the documentation of your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Some ISPs (ex. Bell Sympatico) require you to use THEIR SMTP server for ALL outgoing mail. For instance, instead of setting your outgoing mail server as emailforlife.fmd.uwo.ca you would set it to smtp1.sympatico.ca, OR smtphm.sympatico.ca as an alternative if you continue to have problems sending messages.
I am having problems changing my password: what do I do?
The first thing that you should always check is the URL. In the address bar of your web browser, ensure the address that you are using to visit the email-for-life site is: https://www.emailforlife.fmd.uwo.ca/.... Note the "s" in https://
Once you have verified that the address is correct, the change password option is available under the "Options" menu of the web client.
