1. Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD): Douglas Bocking Award in
Undergraduate Medicine.

Award description: The Douglas Bocking Award was created in honour of Dr. Douglas Bocking, former Vice-Provost of Health Sciences at the University of Western Ontario . Dr. Bocking was also Dean of Medicine for 11 years. This award was established to recognize Dr. Bocking's exceptional contributions to the improvement of medical education. This award is presented annually by Squibb Canada Limited to the FoMD member who, in the opinion of medical students and members of the Dean's Office, has made the most outstanding contribution to the development of medical education during the past four years (i.e. course administration, interest in student career planning, curriculum renewal, etc.). The Dean will present the award, which consists of a plaque and a cheque for $1000, at Convocation.

Nomination process: the Administrative Officer will initiate the nomination process by requesting up to two nominees from the Nomination Committee. Nominators should provide the reasons for the nominations and rank these in order of priority. The Associate Deans will make the final selection.

1. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of (RCPSC): Duncan
Graham Award.

Award description: one of the notable and outstanding awards that the RCPSC may bestow upon an individual is the Duncan Graham Award. This award was introduced in 1969 in honour of the late Dr. Duncan Graham, for his many years as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto . The award is conferred upon any individual, whether a physician or not, in recognition of outstanding lifelong contribution to medical education. The award is usually conferred each year at the Convocation of the Royal College Annual Meeting and it consists of $1,000 accompanied by a suitably engraved memento. The Duncan Graham Award is supported financially by donations to the Royal College 's Educational Endowment Fund from former students and friends of Dr. Graham.

Nomination process and deadlines: nominations are solicited from the deans of the Faculties of Medicine. The Awards Committee of the RCPSC selects this recipient of the award. 2. RCPSC/AMS Donald Richards Wilson Award.

Award description: the RCPSC, in collaboration with Associate Medical Services Inc. (AMS) has established an award to honour and acknowledge the contribution of Dr. Donald R. Wilson (President, RCPSC, 1988-1990) to medical education. Dr. Wilson led the initiative which served as the foundation from which emerged the CanMEDS program of the RCPSC. This award will be given annually to a medical educator (not necessarily a Fellow) or an identified leader of a team, program, or department who has demonstrated excellence in integrating the CanMEDS roles into a Royal College training program. The successful applicant(s) will receive an award of $2,000 plus a suitably engraved recognition. Ordinarily, the recipient will be recognized at the time of the convocation ceremony during the Royal College 's Annual Conference.

3. RCPSC: Regional Award.

Award description: the Regional Award recognizes Fellows for: *       outstanding qualities and contributions as medical educators *       outstanding service to their community *       outstanding service to the RCPSC

The Award is given for achievement in any of these three criteria. One or two awards per region will be granted each year. The award should be in recognition of service over a long period of time and it consists of a plaque stating the reason for the award. Presentation of the award should occur at an appropriate occasion among the recipient's peers and in the presence of a representative of the RAC or an official of the Royal College with the intention of adding visibility to the recipient, the Regional Award, and the RCPSC.

4. RCPSC: Regional Mentor of the Year Award.

Award description: the Regional Mentor of the Year Award was established to acknowledge Fellows who have demonstrated a long-standing commitment to the welfare of patients and to high standard of excellence in clinical care and ethical conduct. The award is in recognition of the qualities of a "professional," as described in CanMEDS. The nominee will not only have been a role model to residents and Fellows, but his/her mentorship will have had a long-lasting impact on their career. One award per region will be granted each year and it consists of a plaque stating the reason for the award. Presentation of the award will take place at a social event at a RAC meeting or at another appropriate time.

Award description: the NBME invites nominations for the 2005 John P. Hubbard Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the assessment of professional competency and educational program development at any level along the continuum of medical education and delivery of health care. It is expected that the successful candidate will have demonstrated outstanding achievement in one or more of the following areas:*       substantial record of fostering development of evaluation methods and/or measurement techniques *       personal contributions to basic or applied research in the creation or improvement of assessment technology *       accomplishment in improving the quality of evaluation at an organizational level *       contributions through the education or mentoring of students, colleagues, fellows or graduate students, to further progress in evaluation.

Recognition of contributions to medicine in curricular development, instructional methodology, or medical training methods is not the primary purpose of the award.

Eligibility and nomination process: the award is not limited to nominees in the . A letter of nomination is to be submitted from a primary sponsor which specifically addresses the nominee's achievements in relation to at least one of the above criteria and is to be accompanied by the nominee's current curriculum vitae along with any other relevant information that would be useful to the Award Committee. The Award Committee will select finalists and nominators may be asked to submit additional information regarding the finalist.

1. Association of Canadian Medical Colleges (ACMC): The John Ruedy Award
for Innovation in Medical Education.

Award description: to honour Dr. John Ruedy on his retirement as Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1999, the Faculty of Medicine established a national award in his name. This award will be presented to an individual or group who has developed innovative print materials, electronic learning aids or other teaching aids. These Canadian innovations can take the form of textbooks, software, CD-ROM, or other technology that has aided medical education initiatives in undergraduate, postgraduate or continuing medical education. Presentation of the award will take place annually in conjunction with the ACMC-CAME Annual Meeting.

Eligibility and deadline: the award is open to any individual or group working in any medical school in . The selection committee will include representatives appointed by the ACMC. The 2005 deadline has not been confirmed, but is expected to be mid-November, 2004.

2. ACMC-AstraZeneca Award for Exemplary Contribution to Faculty Development in .

Award description: to emphasize the importance of faculty development and to recognize an individual or group in who has made an exceptional contribution in this area, ACMC and AstraZeneca are pleased to offer this award. The award and its associated $1,000 honorarium will be presented at the ACMC-CAME Annual Meeting. The recipient is also eligible to receive a grant of $4,000 to continue promoting faculty development across .

Eligibility and nomination deadline: any representative of the ACMC, through the office of the dean, or a member of CAME, may submit one nomination. Each nomination must be co-sponsored by three members from either association. Nominators should take into consideration the breadth of the nominees' faculty development program, its regional, national or international impact, and how the nominees have promoted the field of faculty development generally. 3. The ACMC-GlaxoSmithKline Young Educators Award.

Award description: the award is intended to recognize individuals who have made a major contribution to medical education in and are in the early years of their academic career. These individuals by their vision, work and interaction with colleagues will have produced change within their university or within the medical community as a whole. Nominees will often be recognized as outstanding teachers, but this in itself will not be the basis for the award.

Eligibility: Faculty eligible for this award should have up to, but not more than, seven years experience as a faculty member. The award is open to candidates with MD or graduate degrees.

Nomination process and deadline: there will be a maximum of two nominations put forward by the dean of each medical school in . The Selection Committee for this award will include the President and either Past-President or President-elect of the ACMC, the Chairs of the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Continuing Medical Education Standing Committees as well as the Presdient of CAME. The 2005 nomination deadline has not been confirmed, but is expected to be mid-November, 2004.

Award description: each year the OCUFA recognizes outstanding teachers and since 1973, it has presented 315 awards.

Eligibility: in the context of the OCUFA awards, virtually all levels of instruction are embraced - graduate and undergraduate teaching, continuing education and faculty development. Proficiency in teaching may extend beyond the classroom, the laboratory or the faculty member's offices. Activities such as course design, curriculum development, organization of teaching programs and other significant forms of leadership are often important contributions to the instructional process. Those who excel in any of these are eligible for the OCUFA Teaching Awards.

Nomination process and deadline: nominations are invited from individuals, informal groups of faculty or students or both, and such organizations as local faculty associations, faculty or college councils, university committees concerned with teaching and learning, librarians, local student councils, departments, alumni, etc. The deadline for the 2004 competition has not been confirmed (expected to be in February, 2005).

3. FoMD: Team Award of Excellence.

Award description: the team award is based on evidence of excellence in academic endeavours with particular emphasis on exceptional performance by a team in research, teaching, administration, innovation or public service. The team award reflects the philosophy that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" and is designed to recognize creative collaboration, excellence as demonstrated by peer-reviewed recognition, continuing enthusiasm for collaboration and ability to adapt to change, appreciation by peers of the team's contribution to the larger enterprise, and willingness to aid in fostering success in other teams. Team recipients will be presented with their award at a FoMD banquet. Names will also be added to a plaque which is permanently displayed in the Medical Sciences Building at the University. No more than two team awards will be presented annually, one focused primarily on education and one focused primarily on research.

Eligibility: is open to all full-time and part-time members of the FoMD. Teams may include members representing multiple departments. Award description: The Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M have joined to reward exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities. The community of 3M Teaching Fellows embodies the highest ideals of teaching excellence and scholarship with a commitment to enhance the educational experience of every learner. Up to ten awards will be presented annually at the STLHE conference in June. 3M Fellowship winners will be invited to attend an all-expense paid, 3-day retreat at the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello to celebrate others' exceptional achievements in teaching and to provide an opportunity for outstanding teachers to share experiences and ideas. The award also includes lifetime membership in the Society.

Award description: The CCS Trainee Excellence Award is presented annually to a trainee in recognition of extraordinary accomplishment in all aspects of medical education in any of the cardiovascular fields. The trainee should have earned distinction as an outstanding teacher of fellow trainnes, junior housestaff, and medical students.
